Turned boxes are some of the most popular and attractive projects that can be made using a lathe. A professional turner, Stott offers a collection of 50 wooden boxes that are remarkable both for their beauty and for their diverse design. After the obligatory tool and wood sections (which are excellent), Stott presents ideas for designing and marketing boxes and shows several methods of finishing them. The boxes range from plain (appropriately called the "simple box") to fancy (one example is evocative of the Space Needle in Seattle). Each design includes instructions, color photos, and a measured drawing with both imperial and metric dimensions. A gallery with boxes made by five leading turners rounds out this title (work by Richard Raffan isn't included, which is unfortunate since his Turning Boxes with Richard Raffan is the standard on this subject). Stott's title is the perfect mate to Raffan's since its forte is design, while Raffan excels at teaching turning technique. This, Stott's first book, is excellent and should be part of public library woodworking collections.

About the Author
Dr. Liz Thach, MW (pronounced “tosh”) is the Distinguished Professor of Wine at Sonoma State University in the Wine Business Institute where she teaches in both the undergraduate and Wine MBA programs. She obtained her Ph.D. at Texas A&M University and the distinction of Master of Wine (MW) in 2011. Dr. Steve Charters, MW is Director of Research in the School of Wine and Spirits Business, ESC Dijon/Burgundy School of Business in Dijon, France. He was previously Professor of Champagne Management at Reims Management School and before that taught in Perth, Australia, where he gained a PhD from Edith Cowan University.

An excellent and highly useful read

This readable and comprehensive guide to world wine tourism is a most valuable addition to the field. It is definitely a book that eno-tourists as well as wine business professionals will want to read and own. The authors deal with all of the major wine growing regions including detailed information about the history of the region together with illustrations and photos that bring each region to life. In addition, the case studies of outstanding wineries provide insight into how these wineries excel as well as providing guidelines to industry professionals who wish to improve their operations to appeal to travelers and attract other clientele. The first person stories in many chapters is engaging and allows the reader to meet the people who make these wineries stand out. An excellent and highly useful read.

Very useful information - highly recommend!

As someone working in the international wine business, I found some of the case studies on innovative wine tourism experiences quite useful. I was especially impressed at the vast array of tourist activities they are offering at the wineries in Argentina, Portugal and Spain. It would be useful to adopt some of these at US wineries.

About the Author
Kerry Ferris is Associate Professor of Sociology at Northern Illinois University. She uses ethnographic methods to study fame as a system of social power. Currently, she is researching the lives of professional celebrity impersonators and also analyzing the emotions communicated by celebrities in red-carpet interviews.

Jill Stein is Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Santa Barbara City College. It actually came in better condition than it was stated since I bought a used one. There were no tears or marks. It also arrived a day earlier than I expected and was well packaged.
I also really enjoyed the book. It really captures your interest. I love how it has a "HOW TO READ THIS CHAPTER" and somehow tries to make you relate to what is going to be said and even has a section for you to participate in your own sociological experiment called "DATA WORKSHOPS". Although it was used for my class, I think I'll be keeing it around for references now and then. Great book.

which was cool. Good condition

Yep, it's the textbook for my college class.
The used copy I got had a few markings/underlines, and tabs on each chapter intro, which was cool. Good condition.

Good, interesting content. Don't know that I'd go out of my way to read it if I hadn't invested time into credit hours toward a degree, but sociology certainly is some cool stuff.

This book documents, with humble distillation, the many thrills and spills of scientific discovery and application. Innovation is the key to economic survival and is the only real competitive advantage. Many personalities vie for control of corporate sponsorship and funding so these critical programs require not only heavy brain power but masterful political maneuvering to make into reality.
Dr. Spiro relays through his compelling experiences key lessons and takeaways for people working at every level in the corporate world as well as any lay person who wants to learn more about how things do (and do not) make it into our everyday lives as products. Highly recommended!

Into the R&D Battle!

Spiro darts across the industrial R&D minefield, between exploding light bulbs, indestructible and toxic wastes and stealth airplanes, armed to the teeth with weapons loaded with pathos and humor, withstanding fire from friend and foe alike. Pugnacious, witty and indeed showcasing, in the spirit of Carlyle and Edison, a transcendent capacity for taking (and making) trouble. Read this book if you are in or would like to be in an industrial R&D career, study it if you would like to profit from the work of Spiro and his army.

Right out of the trenches!

Insightful, genuine and funny, Cliff Spiro brings together a series of vignettes to make it through the minefield of corporate R&D (almost) unscathed from his rich corporate R&D experience. The path can be tortuous and unexpected. I highly recommend this book to engineers, scientists, manager, executives of all ages who either need vindication, guidance or just a good dose of reality.

Best before 40

The writer has named the book 'Best After 40'. I think it makes it look like you should read it when you are already or way past 40. However, I am not 40, yet have enjoyed it a lot; and learned even more!
I am not entirely okay with the kind of shifting impressionist presentation; nonetheless, some parts of it are very sophisticated and remind me of antique poetry. Others are more like very detailed movie scripts, with some delicates face-to-face scenes. While reading it, I kept on thinking about Coelho's 'Alchemist' and that book by the title 'Eat, Pray, Love' by Elizabeth Gilbert. This one is very different though. The narrator in the book - I don't know anything about the writer's real bio - seems to come from an Eastern European background and this makes it an even more interesting read - it is as if Medea or Rachel from the Bible wrote a book today. I hope this one makes it big, though it would need a bigger publisher I guess. :-D
Oh, and I would have chosen a different colour for the cover (difficult to read on a bus without people watching a pink book in your hands you know); but the stone is a good pick. My kids and wife liked it too.

A Great series of biographies

This is an excellent series of biographies for children. Full of interesting facts, easy and enjoyable to read, and great for whetting the appetite to read further. It is just a pity that there isn't a UK equivalent series, I can think of lots more people that it would be nice to read about. The whole format is very attractive and the books bring the people to life. My grandchildren, ranging fro 8 to 11 all love them, and so do I !!!
