About the Author
Andrew B. Abel is the Ronald A. Rosenfeld Professor of Finance at the Wharton School and professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his AB summa cum laude from Princeton University and holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Abel has published extensively on fiscal policy, capital formation, monetary policy, asset pricing, and social security–as well as serving on the editorial boards of numerous journals. He has been honored as the Alfred P. Sloan Fellow, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and a recipient of the John Kenneth Galbraith Award for teaching excellence. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a member of the Advisory Board of the Carnegie-Rochester Conference Series.

Ben S. Bernanke Previously the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University, Ben Bernanke received both the Allyn Young Prize for best Harvard undergraduate economics thesis and the John H. Williams prize for outstanding senior in the economics department. He went on to earn his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he has been honored as a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Currently, he is Chairman and a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

Dean Croushore is an associate professor of economics and Rigsby Fellow at the University of Richmond. Croushore served for fourteen years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, twelve of which as the head of the macroeconomics section. He has taught previously at Penn State University, Temple University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University, and Princeton University.

Ron Kneebone is a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary. From 2006 to 2009 he served as Director of the Institute for Advanced Policy Research at the University of Calgary. �Since 2009, when the IAPR was absorbed into the School of Public Policy, he has acted as Director of Economic & Social Policy Research in the School.�Dr Kneebone’s research interests lay mainly in the areas of the macroeconomic aspects of public finances and fiscal federalism. His published research has dealt with issues pertaining to government budget financing in a federal state, the political economy of government deficit and debt reduction, the history of government fiscal and monetary relations in Canada and the characteristics of Canadian federal, provincial and municipal fiscal policy choices.

I bought this text for self study. This book is clearly written so that a self-learner can learn intermediate macroeconomics. I particularly like the appendix that follows the chapter on IS-LM. The problems in both the workbook and the textbook allow me to think deeply about the concepts.

The text does not have any answers at the back of the text.

Every morning for the past semester, I have worked my way through this text. I find the text easy reading and enjoyable.

Class was terrible, book was GREAT

The topic is a hard if you are not a math wiz. I honestly had a lot of trouble with Micro economics because of the terrible book, but thought this book was outstanding in explaining the topic. I did well in this class not because the professor was any good, but because this book had great examples, explained everything in great detail and was to the point. Yes, i need the dumbed down version...this is a basics book. I cant stand ordering a basics book, only to have it be completely over my head. This def did its job. I highly recommend it.

Decent, but do not purchase from Amazon.com if you need MyEconLab

Another reviewer mentioned he/she got a version without MyEconLab (which costs $50 extra to purchase separately). I thought he/she just bought it off of someone in the Amazon *marketplace*. Nope, I bought the version "sold by and fulfilled by Amazon" and I also got shafted. The book is supposed to come in shrinkwrap with MyEconLab login sheet attached to it, but mine came without it. If you need the login, your university bookstore may just be the cheapest place to find this thing.

Update: I gave it 2 stars initially for the rip-off. Now, after having read the book, I'd give it 3 to 5 stars for content. My University of Chicago professor did a lot better job explaining the concepts than the book, so maybe my expectations are inflated, but I thought that Abel/Bernanke could have made it more simple and less verbose. Still, if you can stay focused enough to read this thing (I had a hard time and I like the subject matter), it does explain macro much better than some of the alternatives I've seen before. Also, the "real life" application green sections are incredibly valuable, as they contain some empirical data to show which theories are most likely valid; e.g. does lowering personal taxes actually "stimulate the economy" (increase GDP). A lot of macroeconomics is about which theory/assumptions you end up believing, and this book does a decently good and impartial job at pointing you in the "probably right" direction. You will also gain some appreciation for why macroeconomists can disagree so strongly about basic policy issues.

Overall, I'd give this book three stars compared to my grad school professor but five stars comparing to my undergrad professor and textbook. If you are forced to learn macro by just reading this book, you'll get a pretty good basic understanding without too much pain (comparing to the alternatives of course).

Lora D. Delwiche enjoys teaching people about SAS software and likes solving challenging problems using SAS. She has spent most of her career at the University of California, Davis, using SAS in support of teaching and research.

Environmental degradation is no longer a peripheral concern of the social sciences and contemporary politics: it is an unavoidable and pressing reality. This book seeks to establish whether contemporary social theory can help us understand the structural origins of environmental degradation and environmental politics.

The book opens by arguing that the historical bequest of classical social theory is very limited. Marx, Weber and Durkheim lived long enough to witness the environmental consequences of modern economic growth but died too soon to witness its long term consequences and the growth of political resistance. Goldblatt attempts to transcend the limits of that tradition through a critical investigation of the work of Anthony Giddens, Andre Gorz, Jurgen Habermas and Ulrich Beck.

Social Theory and the Environment analyses the roles of capitalism, state socialism and industrialism in generating environmental degradation; the environmental implications of urbanism and globalisation; the integration of environmental questions with political economy; and the structural origins of environmental movements. It concludes with a discussion of the relationship between conceptions of socialism in social theory and its relevance to contemporary environmental politics. Wide ranging and carefully argued, this challenging text will be of particular interest to students of social and political theory, ecology and enviromental studies.

It is a must read for students, scholars and practitioners alike in the fields of antitrust policy and industrial organization economics. Most chapters are well written, intensely illuminating and very stimulating on deep issues that really matter for research, business and the economy.

I teach an "economics of Antitrust course" and found the Antitrust Revolution to be a teriffic complement to Blair & Kaserman's text Antitrust Economics. I have my students write "case briefs" of the case studies presented in the text based upon different categories of conduct. Each case study is written by an economist directly involved in the case. Students appreciate the perspective of an insider in seeing how economic analysis is employed in the adjudication of these important antitrust cases.

Good quality book, nothing was worn or discolored/printed.

Not an exciting read, but is used in many college courses.

Arrived later than promised, and was no longer needed by the time it arrived, which is a bummer when things have prime shipping.

About the Author
Brian Astbury founded and ran South Africa's first non-racial theatre/arts venue, The Space, in the 70's, where he commissioned internationally famous plays like Sizwe Banzi is dead, The Island and Statements after an arrest under the Immorality Act from playwrights like Athol Fugard, Pieter-Dirk Uys, Geraldine Aron and Fatima Dike, South Africa's first black woman playwright. Many of the 'graduates' of The Space have gone on to become mainstays of the post-Apartheid South African theatre, TV and film scene. At The Space he began his career as a director. In the 80's he moved to London when his wife, South Africa's greatest actress, Yvonne Bryceland, joined the National Theatre Company. Here he began to teach - first at LAMDA, then, in the 90's at Mountview, where he was Head of Acting, Directing and Musical Theatre Courses. In 2003 he moved to E15 where he set up the Contemporary Theatre Practice course to teach actors, directors and writers the arts of survival through production of their own material. Later he headed the MA in Professional Theatre for Writers and Directors, before retiring in 2008. Over the years Astbury has formulated the techniques for training actors, writers and directors described in Trusting the Actor in collaboration with students and professional actors. Many of these techniques have their basis in the use of energy and emotion to free the practitioner's imagination, allowing actors to understand and be able to access the mysterious state known as 'being in the moment'. He has also developed methods of accessing and freeing the imagination of writers through the use of mind-mapping and image-streaming. He has done workshops on these techniques at the Young Vic, the National Theatre Studio, the London Playwrights Collective among others.

a must read!

For the last 10 years, I couldn't name a recent book that would have brought a fresh perspective to the actor's craft. The ones worth reading were from past decades, from Stanislavsky to Viola Spolin, from Meisner to Eric Morris.
Until I came across Brian Astbury's book - Trusting the Actor, published in 2011.
What a hidden gem this is.
Brian Astbury is a South-African theatre director who developed a unique approach to acting while working as an acting teacher in the UK.
This approach can be (perhaps unhelpfully?) described as anti-Stanislavsky - he stirrs away from analyzing the text and tries to get the actor's "right-side of the brain" engaged in the process, turning the performance into something alive and instinctive.

The first half of the book retraces his professional career and life, with a good dose of personality and wit, while pinpointing the biggest dilemmas faced by actors. The second half outlines the exercises that Brian teaches. Best of all, he names his sources (current findings from neuroscientists like Antonio Damasio and Joseph LeDoux, for instance), explains his reasoning, and is brave/humble enough to admit mistakes and lessons learned along the way.
Beyond mixing theory with practice, there's so much passion in his writing... it makes for such a compelling read and a real inspiration to anyone who is taking first steps towards the profession.

On a side note, this approach -or something very close to it- has been practiced by Brazilian acting coaches like Fatima Toledo in Brazil's film industry, leading to a visceral acting that has drawn a lot of attention in films like Central Station, City of God, Lower City, Elite Squad, among others. So if you're curious to see what this technique can lead to, it's worth taking a look at the films mentioned.

Finally. An accessible, unpretentious and immediately applicable piece of practical advice about Acting, Directing, Life & What to do about it.

Do you ever wish you could take a friend, teacher or icon, fold them up and put them in your pocket for inspiration, support or just plain company? Well, ladies and gentlemen, here it is: a perfectly portable Brian Astbury! As my mentor and friend, I've often wanted to zap to the UK, wander into his favourite caf and simply listen. Now, in the absence of zapping, I simply open my Kindle (what an invention!) and read.

This book is an absolute must in the tool bag of any modern day theatre professional and an interesting read for those interested in emotional and social behaviour. The book strikes a perfect balance between theory and practice, covering a range of exercises, techniques and methods, and substantiating them with a range of funny and moving memories from Astbury's intriguing life.

Mostly, I've found this book hugely inspiring as an actor and director.

Inspirational

This book contains some of the most inspirational and practical information for actors, directors and writers that I've ever encountered. While I have found other theatre books to be though provoking, none of them have stirred me to pick up a pen and start writing immediately the way this one has. I had the privilege of spending several months studying with Brian in college during a particularly stimulating and formative time. Reading the book took me back to the feelings and impulses I remember having at that time but also drove me forward to new creative endeavors. I am thrilled to now have a means of listening to Brian whenever I find myself stuck creatively, by simply opening the book and reading his words.

Entertaining sci-fi that still stimulates brain cells

For those who like their science fiction relatively grounded and free of fleets of gleaming starships ferrying troops from one bloodied interplanetary battleground to another, then Lior Samson's �"Requisite Variety" is worth reading.

This set of stories largely explore the Earth-based computer and pharmaceutical revolutions and extrapolate their effects on humanity. Make no mistake: The anthology's theme is cautionary futurism. The humans in these stories often populate near or distant future realities that rely heavily upon advanced technology or states of mind. But, their burden of coming to grips with the level of dependence, or frankly addiction, isn't as consistently dreary or overbearing as George Orwell or Aldus Huxley. Samson instead generally employs Arthur C. Clarke's multi-cultural, globe-trotting style and adds a modern levity and sense of humor to many of the plots. This keeps the reader engaged and hopeful of some character transformation or enlightenment, if not always a happily ever after conclusion.

The anthology's best stories include the following:

Requisite Variety-- A futuristic tale set in Sydney, Australia, underemployed space pilot Barry grudgingly accepts a job as what seems like another cog in the wheel of one of the continent's ultra-mechanized skyscrapers. But Barry and co-worker Anya find their dormant skills and intelligence are useful after all when one day, things begin to go haywire. A nicely done, fairly suspenseful man vs. machine tale.

Not My Type-- A near futuristic tale that plays like a cautionary sitcom, with geeky computer programmer Alexi Danichov finally finding the woman of his dreams. Or are they of someone else's dreams? And is Alexi's dream girl �Khaddia Winslow all she seems? A humorous look at the effects of media marketing and the rise of microchips and cybernetic implant technology.

Sweet Success-- A postmodern look at the effects of pharmaceutical advancements and drug dependence, this is arguably the best story of the anthology. Independent Investigation Bureau agent Derek Scheinner's boredom is broken by an intriguing field assignment that puts him on the trail of a wildly popular chocolate chip cookie and its creator. The characters are colorful; the settings, richly-detailed; and the story briskly-paced, without compromising its deeper message. �

First Business-- A look at the concept of original sin from the view of virtual reality games, this somewhat disturbing story follows the desires of two off-work business executives, Nick and Phil. Are the holographic fantasies of "The Big Apple" all in their mind? Not nearly as many laughs as most of the other stories, but still an excellent job of characterization and imagery throughout that capture the degenerate underbelly of many big cities (made worse by accessiblity to the latest developments in technology and commerce).

"Requisite Variety" has many more such hits than it does misses. There are wholly alien and other-worldly tales to be had ("In Chapter Three Remember", "Dellahar's Father") and a few long short stories near the end. But, it is still a portrait of the artist as a young writer. Samson's attempts at espionage ("Digital Mole", "Conspiracy of the Silent") and dream state/stream-of-consciousness fiction ("Circular Logic", "The Occupant of Cell 2f") fall flat. But luckily, they're not the focus of the anthology--merely cerebral breathers perhaps from the greater speculative/sci-fi angle instead.

Overall, Lior Samson succeeds at delivering an entertaining and enlightening science and speculative fiction reading experience. While the laser blasts and body counts may be too low for some fans of the genre, there is ample intellectual action and adventure to stimulate the brain cells of discerning readers. Samson more often pits great characters in novel situations that twist and bend their minds to their limits, even breaking some of them into conformity. "Requisite Variety" is an excellent addition to any thinking person's library of science fiction and speculative fiction.
