Excellent introduction to MATLAB!!!

I was first introduced to Matlab as part of a junior level signal processing course. Without any kind of introductory manual on using Matlab, I struggled through the course believing that it was a pain to use. Recently, needing to use Matlab again, I found Knight's book in my school library. It made a huge difference. After just a few hours with the book I felt like a Matlab wiz. This book covers the basics concisely, using plenty of examples, and also shows how easy it is to use more advanced features like graphical user interfaces. It also provides instruction for dowloading a library of useful m-files and demos. It is not a comprehensive reference but I couldn't recommend it more highly to a person who needs to learn to use Matlab or feels uncomfortable using it.

Good introductory text with some gaps

I am a neurologist and not an engineer. I made a hesitant first introduction with MATLAB when I ventured into studying some event related spectral power changes. I wanted a DIY manual- which will enable me to play with MATLAB and learn in the process. This is a good book- assumes no prior knowledge, has clarity and manageable volume. However, there are some gaps. For someone from non-mathematical background, a brief chapter on linear algebra (slightly more than few sections in chapter 1) or even suggesting some resource to go to before venturing into MATLAB, would have been appreciable. Perhaps the biggest drawback of this book is that it has lot of gaps between chapters and lacks a smooth flow. Majority of latter chapters use concepts that are not given in earlier ones, rather a lot of knowledge is presumed (e.g. chapter on TFA could have done with some introduction to signals and systems). Perhaps, engineers will have that material from other parallel courses. All in all, a good but insufficient introductory book. I will recommend using it in conjunction with another book and not alone.

Not a wiz, but not an idiot either

I used this book as part of a computer-modeling course at Duke. I don't think it alone will make you a wiz at Matlab, but it does help you overcome that, "What did I just get myself into?" feeling. For the movice this is a very useful resource that will keep you from bouncing you head against the nearest wall while using the program.

Mis-titled, and overpriced

What the book does well is help people understand that what they experienced in their family of origin WAS abuse. It's not them. That they are not alone. Help is available. At $9.99 the "book" is grossly overpriced. It is closer to a pamphlet or an outline. The language is at a Grammer school level, complete with larger type and illustrations. As the book states, there are only questions.. no answers.. few details.. And little about what to do next. I feel the book was mis-titled, and that it is not a good value for the money.

Dedicated to all the survivors of child abuse.

Read this book in one sitting. When I first opened it, and observed all the pictures in it, I thought to myself "this is a book for children". Not so. This is for all survivor's of child abuse. And, all types of child abuse. The author deals with verbal, physical, and sexual abuse, and only stresses reading this book as an adjunct to professional help.

We raise our children with self-esteem, I believe, because the world knocks us all around enough. Some children were raised believing, because of the verbal and physical (and/or sexual) assaults by their parents that they are not literally fit to walk the face of the earth. The author brings out the long-range ramifications of this abuse; detached semi-permanent relationships, marrying, literally an abuser not unlike one's parents, alcohol and drug abuse to ease the pain, and the list goes on and on. She describes the defensiveness and the "building walls" of those who were abused and how to break down those walls on the road to wholeness.

There are many good survival tips in this book. I do stress, that it should be used in conjunction with professional help. Words hurt, straps and belts hurt, and could leave scars for a lifetime which can manifest themselves in anger, misplaced rage, and a host of other maladaptive behaviors.

The one thing, I think the author failed to mention is after taking (or during) these initial steps to recover from abuse, pastoral care with an eye towards forgiveness is also helpful. Most clergy are trained these days in counseling people who are survivors of abuse. Forgiveness is the ultimate tribute not to your abuser, but towards yourself in putting the past behind you and moving forward. All in all, this is a highly recommended book.

Easy read for a difficult subject

If you are a survivor or know a survivor this book can help explain some of the strange feelings and unexpected difficulties that may be suddenly popping up out of the blue or that have been festering and worrying you for years. I was first introduced to this book by my therapist after I suddenly stopped being able to function at work. I had no idea why... I had been out of the abuse cycle for several years and had never let it interfere with my work before but suddenly I was stuck. While the book by itself did not solve my issues, it did help me understand why they had suddenly popped up. I would recommend any survivor to read this book but to also read the webpages that come up when you google search "PTSD and the brain"; it really helps to know the effects that events way in the past have had permanently on your body and brain so that you can heal yourself.

For the Fringe Faithful

This is truly a wonderful labor of love and it shows all thoughout the book. It is shock full of details, information and it even has details on every single fringe case file. I love the envelopes with classified documents, the loyalits tattoos are a great add on. This book is very well constructed, it is quite heavy and is printed in High quality paper, full of bright detailed photos some of which are unique to this book. My favorite is one of a much younger Walter and William Bell.

The book is divided into 5 distinct sections Over Here (Season 1 and Season 2), Over There (Season 3), Another Timeline (Season 4) and 2036 (Final Season). And each section has detailed information on the characters and events corresponding to that particular season. I love the fact that the book itself reads like a Giant scrapbook album where every time you turn the page you find something new. The pages themselves have Photos and revelant documents or information regarding that event, character or case, and in each page the blue notes are September's personal observations.

There 3 dossier one for the Redverse, one for the Blueverse and one for the Amber Timeline detailing every fringe case file that occurred in each one. At the end of the book there is a complete episode guide for all 5 season and some amazing artwork from Brown Betty and Lysergic Acid Diethylamide.

I do recommend this to any Fringe fan. It is a wonderful companion to the show whether you are a long time faithful fan or just finding out about the Bishops.

UPDATE: To everyone wondering why the envelope that was supposed to contained the white tulip is empty. This was done on purpose it is not a mistake. It is actually a testament of how deeply involved this book is with the show, it is empty because of how the show ended and if you would like a more thorough explaination, I want to point you to Episode 511 "The Boy Must Live". This episode it also the first glimpse we get of September's Notebook. Hope this helps.

Excellent companion to Fringe

[[VIDEOID:moQS80515XCMHZ]]This is an incredible book for all fans of Fringe. I'm one, and I'm thrilled by it.

It's put together and presented in beautiful scrapbook style. Included are insets, removable items, posters. The book edges have navigation tabs coming out like those you case files you normally see on TV. Full marks for presentation.

In terms of content, this book is packed with an amazing amount of information and pictures.

The book covers in detail both the universes and the other timeline. You have Walter's history, stories about Peter's illness that leads to the crossing of the universe, Cortexiphan Trails, Massive Dynamic and their secret projects, Fringe division and all their agents and the cases they have worked on. That's just for the original universe.

In the later sections of the book, it looks at all the differences between the universes and timelines. So you have Walter(nate) and all the Fringe doubles from the alternate universe.

There's a lot to read. It's a good recap as the events are presented in more linear and hence clearer. You'll also get some insight because September's observations can be found in little blue notes all over the book. These are stuff you don't get from just watching the show, and there are many other nuggets of information.

The pictures are great, and there are loads of them. There are the strange symbols from the opening credits, photos of the past Observers caught on camera, characters, news articles, graphics from the other universe, props, the time machine, gory pictures from cases, and more!

It's a pretty comprehensive companion to the show.

Highly recommended.

Warning about the Limited Edition

What I have written below still stands for the regular edition. However, I have recently finally received the limited edition as well. It has been advertised as including a bookplate signed by Torv, Jackson, Noble, and Wyman, but upon examining mine, I noticed it looked identical to the one my friend received, as well as identical to pictures others had posted of theirs online. I contacted Insight Editions asking about it, and they confirmed that "some of the signature cards were generated with authorization by a replicating machine, for the actors could not sign all of them."

They didn't say how many cards had genuine signatures, but I'm guessing it's the 300 or so that was initially supposed to be published, before they expanded the run to 1300.

Otherwise, yes, the limited edition set is wonderful. But if you really care about the autographs, know that you'll probably receive fakes.

And I'm changing this to a one star review to reflect my dissatisfaction (to put it lightly) with Insight for never publicly announcing this change with the autographs. Given how expensive the set is, surely the autographs are one of the main selling points, yet the ones most will receive are worthless.

The book gives a beautiful first impression, with the appearance of a weathered cover, page dividers that look like file folders, and pages filled with bright pictures and commentary from September. Some pages have extra pictures or small sheets that are attached at their corners, so you can lift them up to see (most of) the rest of the page below, and there are folders with more case files and replicas to admire (my favorite was the Etta Resist poster).

It is organized mostly chronologically, starting with Walter and his early career, and moving through the first three seasons in the blue universe. The second section covers the events of season 3 in the red verse, the third section covers both universes in the new amber timeline, and the fourth and final section jumps to 2036. Each of the first three sections includes background on all main characters (and some minor), explanations of key plot points, and details of virtually every Fringe case they investigated. (Each case file number corresponds with the episode number and air date, and below includes the glyphs for that episode. Just inside the front cover of the book there's a glyph key to help decode them.) The section on 2036 is much shorter, and mostly focuses on the different parts of September and Walter's plan.

The written content itself is thorough, but I did notice a small handful of mistakes. Not enough to put me off of the book entirely, but annoying nonetheless. I also noticed inconsistencies with characters' birth dates (one date given in the bio/history, another noted on an ID card or paperwork), but I am aware that the canon itself was inconsistent in such details.

On the other hand, there are snippets of extra information that was never given with the TV show itself. Nothing especially mind-blowing, but still interesting. Unfortunately, where I was most hoping for more information (all the missing years between 2012 and 2036), we got almost nothing.

But my biggest peeve had to do with the small, loose case files, glued to the main pages at the file's top left corner. I suppose they're meant to give it more of a scrapbook feel, as if September was sticking these in himself. But about half of them are glued to the page in such a way that they obscure text on the main page below, and while you can lift them to read part of it, there are some lines that remain blocked entirely.

Still, as a whole I would recommend it for fans. The pictures especially were enjoyable to look through, with many of them new, or revealing more details than could be seen on the show, and there is enough information for many hours worth of reading and rereading to catch it all.
