This comprehensive and heavy tome illustrates all the works of art on display in the Vatican and underscores the variety of its art, including works that popes commissioned from painters as well as works that were accumulated for art appreciation and prestige beginning in the 17th century. The book is divided into 22 sections representing the museums and areas of the Vatican. This includes the Pinacoteca (painting gallery), with paintings given to or purchased by the pops or removed from altarpieces of papal churches.  Also included are images of art from the Borgia Apartments, the famous Raphael Rooms, and Michelangelo?s Sistine Chapel.  Lesser-known works are included, such as a collection of modern religious art and tapestry and maps.  The diversity of the holdings is highlighted by such collections as the Pio-Clementine Museum of early Christian Rome, the Gregorian Etruscan Museum, which houses non-Western art.  Not to be forgotten is St. Peter?s Basilica and Piazz, and its art including Michelangelo?s famous Pieta sculpture.

A Peek into the history of the Vatican

Amazing book, great introduction. I received the book as promised within one day and love it. I wish there were more descriptions for some of the smaller paintings and icons too. The picture quality is great for some but I think some of them are too old and hence don't photograph well. A great 360 of the Vatican, in fact read this and travel.

I'm actually surprised I didn't love this book as much as I thought I would. It's ok. Some of the paintings are printed so small, I have to get close to the page to see the detail. And I'm actually surprised that this is ALL of the paintings in the Vatican museums... I thought there's be more. Still, it's a well-constructed book... and the nice thing about it is when I got to the Vatican next, I will be able to enjoy the museums at my leisure.

Shirley Better is professor emeritus in the School of Social Work at California State University at Los Angeles, where she designed and implemented an upper division theme of six courses focusing Institutional Racism. She is one of the founders of the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW) and a founder of ABSW-Los Angeles. Dr. Better serves on the boards of several community-based organizations.

A solid primer for help in overcoming racism wherever you live

I am involved in a coalition to overcome institutional racism and I found this book very helpful. It had solid background information/history and a sensitive analysis of the problems confronting all people in the U.S. in the struggle to overcome racism. It gave an excellent basis for doing the work to overcome racism and included enough detail and examples to be both helpful and inspiring. Any white person interested in realizing what is really going on for people of color would benefit from reading it, as well as all people working to overcome institutional racism and struggling with how to proceed will appreciate it.

Great arrangements by Yates--5 stars. Lousy printing/binding--1 star.

The good. These Albeniz piano pieces are standards in the classical guitar repertoire. Stanley Yates' arrangements strive to remain faithful to Albeniz's intentions and to maintain accessibility for classical guitarists. He succeeds famously. His arrangment of Sevilla (for example) is lovely and--because he chooses to keep the main motive in the first position rather than the more common 12th--it's much more accessible than many needlessly more difficult arrangements. His take on the workhorse Asturias/Leyenda is similarly helpful. He provides good LH fingerings as well as peformance notes that include the reassuring observation that the rapid fire i-m droning was Segovia's invention and NOT Albeniz's. Along with this insightful comment, he offers alternative realizations of several passages. These aren't pieces for beginners, but it's exactly this kind of help that makes them accessible for us mere mortals. Thanks, Maestro.

The bad. The printing and binding are a mess. The first 18 measures of Asturias simply didn't get printed--something else is on the front of that page. (Thankfully, the beginning is esssentially the same as a later section ... I think.) Several other pieces suffered a similar fate--there are pages out of order and (worse) missing. Since the pieces I wanted--Sevilla, Malaguena and Tango--are intact, I won't return it, but how disappointing that Mel Bay would have done such a sloppy job with the printing.

Just what one would expect

What can one say about sheet music? This sheet music is sufficiently large as to be easily legible, with no unnecessary markings. It is well bound. Just what I expected. Generally, I am not sufficiently familiar with the various songs as to comment on the authenticity of specific arrangements.

About the Author

I pursued my undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois. I had planned to study nuclear physics, but when I discovered in an introductory psychology course that psychology was really a science, I decided that was what I wanted to do. Before changing my major, I talked with several professors and visited their laboratories, and when I saw what physiological psychologists do, I knew that I had found my niche. I stayed on at Illinois and received my Ph.D. Then, after a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Iowa, I came to the University of Massachusetts, where I’ve been ever since.

When I arrived at UMass I established a laboratory where I investigated the role of the limbic system in species-typical and learned behaviors, continuing work I had done at the University of Illinois. I received several Biomedical Research Support Grants and a research grant from NICHD. As I became more involved in textbook writing, I began to focus my attention more and more on this activity and on my teaching.

I took the opportunity afforded by my first sabbatical leave to write the first edition of Physiology of Behavior. I very much enjoyed the experience, and this endeavor taught me much more about behavioral neuroscience. I was gratified with the positive response of my students and of the colleagues who adopted the book. The pleasure provided by this response and by the enjoyment of keeping up with the literature and writing about it has kept me going for 11 editions. (I have no plans to stop writing.)

I retired from UMass in the fall of 2004 but continue to keep up with developments in the field of behavioral neuroscience and revise my book. The Psychology Department has kindly let me keep an office at the university, which makes it easier for me to continue interacting with my former colleagues.

My interests outside of writing include spending time with our family, traveling, fly fishing, skiing, and flying our small airplane."

Well balanced and easy to read

This book had, in my opinion, just the right amount of information: the chapters were not too long or overloaded with unnecessary details, but each topic was covered fairly in- depth, and throughout confusing or particularly interesting concepts were highlighted with extra information. This book is a really nice foundation for an introductory behavioral neuroscience course; I still refer to it from time to time. The writing style is easy to read and the case files associated with each chapter add interest. This was one of my favorite textbooks.

MyPsychKit access often isn't available from the publisher right after a new edition is released; sometimes you have to wait for it to become available. Amazon has updated the book's description page to reflect that now, however, so I am giving the book five stars.

Just Great.

Giving this textbook 5 stars because I used this thing more then any other college book during my 4 years of college. This book was required for a intro to neuroscience course I was taking. During the time I was taking this class I was taking 18 credit hours and this was the hardest course out of all 5 classes I was taking. And to make it worse, I was taking it online. But yeah, the book was very helpful with the course even thought everything we were tested/quizzed on in that class was based on the professors online lecture videos.

This textbook was great! The author has somehow found a way to take a semi-boring subject (in my opinion), and made it extremely interesting to read. The content is well-organized, very informative, and even humorous at times. This was a great read, and one of the better textbooks I've had to buy during college.
