mind and ego blowing stuff

As a spiritual and holistic healer for many years, I have studied many spiritual traditions and metaphysical practices including Tibetan Buddism, Esoteric Christianity, Anthroposophy, Classical Yoga, Chinese Medicine Spirituality, etc. Gary's first book, Disappearance of the Universe, completely turned everything I thought I knew about spiritual truth on it's head. This follow up book, which I've just started reading, is so delicious, I keep reading it in little bites just to savor the bliss of the message as long as I can. These books completely changed my life, and my spiritual awareness. My intuitive healing abilities have even evolved to a point that I can only say is inspired by the Holy Spirit itself. This message is truly "the light and the way", folks. Fasten your seat belts and get ready to become free!

A Great Read

This book is filled with fascinating events, great teachings and a wonderful sense of humor. Renard's bluntness and clarity are like a breath of fresh air. His teachers are the same as the first book and they continue to deliver top notch teachings in a way everyone can accept and understand. Your Immortal Reality also tells more of Renard's personal story. I feel like I know him and where he's coming from a lot better now. This is a great follow up to "The Disappearance of the Universe" and a great read.

Important Continuation of the Disappearance of the Universe (DU)

When I first heard Gary Renard was working on another book, I thought "well what else is there to say after the DU?" Well, in some ways, a lot! It's true that the message is always about forgiveness and the Love of God. It's also true that the message can become lost when infused with various controversies among Course students or from those of other spiritual paths. In light of this, YIR (Your Immortal Reality) serves as an important corrective for controversies that have sprung up recently in the Course community (if you could call it that) as well as a corrective for several ancillary spiritual teachings that have in various ways become associated with ACIM. As a brief example, Gary's teachers address the editing of the text of ACIM, the story of which has been somewhat distorted among some students; as another example, they address kinesiology, something of a buzzword these days.

Suffice to say there are several such topics that can make it difficult for students of ACIM to get to the heart of what the text is saying. Gary's new book does an excellent job of framing these issues and of bringing us back to the unadulterated message of ACIM. And, as usual, the text is full of extremely interesting tidbits about history (including an offhanded remark about Shakespeare that almost made me fall out of my chair) or about the future (better break out those Star Trek DVDs). I could go on . . .

I love Gary's books. They're fun to read and, as I work through them, I have that rare feeling that every word is vital and important, especially upon reading Pursah's dictation of the Gospel of Thomas. I devoured YIR in one reading the day I got it, and have since been reading it more methodically. And I'll probably read it a third time after that. Yes, there is more to say; I hope I have ears to hear.

A great movie pales compared to this

I rarely read a book after I have seen the movie it was based on because it seems almost akin to reading the final pages of the book first. Why start reading a book when you already know how it ends? When the movie already gives you a mental picture of what the characters are like? When it would be impossible to read the description of a scene, a conversation, an expression, or a mood without thinking first of the director's and screenwriter's interpretation of those things?
I stand by that view, but I also suggest throwing it out the window when it comes to The Pianist.
I was so moved by the film that when I saw this book in a store, I could not help but pick it up. Once in my hands, I could not help but read the first few lines. Once I read them, I could not help but buy the book. And once I bought it, the next day and a half of my life was dominated by the chilling, horrible, graphic and compelling story.
I won't go into an overview of the plot, since my fellow reviewers have covered that territory very accurately. But I will say that this is a rare case where the value of a book is not compromised by the movie -- the story is so well told and the details (most of which the movie screenwriter was forced to leave out) are so evocative and potent that they flow over and around any preconceived notions.
The film is well done, and by all means it should be seen. But don't let seeing the movie deprive you of the pleasure of this powerful book, which illustrates once again what we have known all along -- that great literature succeeds where other art forms fall short.

In January 2000, while visiting Warsaw, I met "Pan Wladek," the retired Director of Music at the Polish Radio. I read a book by him about his survival in the Nazi-occupied capital, and I was intrigued by the fact that I knew all the places he mentioned in the book. I was not surprised to learn that he still lives in the same part of Warsaw that I am from. I knew exactly where to find him.
Pan Wladek was a composer, honored by President of Poland with a Commander Order with a Star of Polonia Restituta. Although for decades he was known to millions for producing popular rather than classical music. He was responsible for launching the careers of many Polish singers. They often complained at first for choosing them the wrong material, almost every time he proved them wrong. A composer of nearly 500 songs; many made the pop charts. My favorite was the one about going to the Old Town, how he described the beauty of the restored part of the city, which was almost completely destroyed during WWII as Hitler's revenge against the Home Army's Warsaw Uprising in 1944. As a child, I learned that song from my grandmother and I sang it to my daughter years later. By the age of 2, she knew it by heart. That January, I visited the author.
After three attempts (finally, I realized that I was knocking on the wrong door), I met Pani Halina, the musician's wife, a doctor who comes from a prominent Polish family. She was an example of hospitality, feeding me with coffeecake and preserves, chatting but not letting me disturb her husband who as she explained was not feeling well that day. I sighed, but had no right to push my luck any farther. We hugged, and I walked to the door when I looked up the stairs. And there he was, the maestro. He was wearing silky navy blue pajamas with tiny white polka dots and a brown velvet robe with his gray hair nonchalantly combed off his face. He walked down slowly. Standing there, speechless, I was yelled at by Pan Wladek for letting my husband wait in the car while I'm chatting and drinking coffee with his wife. I grabbed my husband and brought him before the man. We were treated to the tour of the memory lane; the grand piano in the corner of the living room had a collection of photographs. Pan Wladek traveled the whole world as a member of the Warsaw Piano Quintet. He traveled everywhere but Australia. He talked about his musician friend Bronislaw Gimpel who lived in LA. We learned his whole family story, about the son who lives in Japan and the other one from Hamburg. He was just as I imagined: wise, dignified, well mannered, and funny above it all.
He displayed his disappointment that the American version of his book did not include photographs, as the German edition did.
Later, he mentioned that a famous Polish director contacted him about making a movie based on his book but he was very skeptical, it seemed so unreal. So we just laughed.
Pan Wladek died the following July at age 88. Three years later, I sat in the West Newton movie theatre watching 6 years of his life before my eyes on a big screen. The famous director's name was Polanski. Pan Wladek's last name was Szpilman and he is the main character behind "The Pianist" now "playing in a theatre near you". In the collaboration of three Poles: Fryderyk Chopin, Wladyslaw Szpilman and Roman Polanski, a masterpiece was created. Palme d'Or for the Best Picture at Cannes' International Film Festival was followed by the Boston Film Critics Award, New York Critics Award, and 7 Oscar nominations. In the 80's, the children of the German officer who in the last days of the war offered Szpilman a coat and chose not to kill him, visited Mr.Szpilman in Warsaw. They do not remember their father but learned about Mr.Szpilman from his letters from stalag. The pictures in a photo album beautifully arranged by the officer's daughter in law, showed Mr. Szpilman climbing the stairs to the attic where he hid. The little boy next to him is the grandson of the German officer. Another photograph shows Mr. Szpilman in a beautiful tailored suit and the officer's son exploring together the streets of Warsaw's Old Town. I feel privileged that I had an opportunity to meet Mr.Szpilman, and I feel obligated to share it with you.

An Unforgettable Story of Survival

The Pianist is a moving eye-witness account of one man's survival in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. Wladyslaw Szpilman--a Jew and famed pianist for Polish Radio--relates his memories of the unutterable and unrelenting horrors of the Holocaust in Warsaw--the random executions, starving children, mass deportations--with a sober, almost uncanny detachment. And though the machinery of extermination is all around him, he somehow evades his pursuers through friends willing to risk their lives to hide him. His father, mother, two sisters and a brother are all deported and sent to their deaths in concentration camp. And, when it appears, near war's end, that he is at the end of luck, trying to still keep himself concealed in a part of Warsaw that his been systematically destroyed by the Germans, he finds an unexpected saviour: Wilm Hosenfeld, a German Army captain who, rather than kill Szpilman, provides him with a hiding place and necessities to kept him alive until the Soviet Army finally liberates the city. This slim volume written with in a kind of terse, no-nonsense style that will keep the reader riveted to each episode in Szpilman's incredible Odyssey, is probably one of the best books I have read in the area of Holocaust literature.

From 1990 to 1995 Dr. Rick Strassman conducted DEA-approved clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected sixty volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical that is also manufactured by the human brain, consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many volunteers reported convincing encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, especially “aliens.” Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives.

Strassman’s research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by René Descartes to be the seat of the soul. DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul’s movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that alien abduction experiences are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. A must-read!

This is an incredible book. Strassman's story was so interesting that I couldn't put this book down. It provides an incredible account of the research he did, along with his personal journey through it and all of the hardships he faced. His research was so monumental because it had never been done before in the way he did it, and it will likely never have the chance to be repeated. I gained a lot of insight into the infiniteness of possibility that DMT presents to each user, depending on their personal context. Strassman's scientific and spiritual reasoning throughout this book absolutely blew my mind. This is a must-read for anyone who advocates for psychedelics as valuable spiritual/psychological tools.

I've enjoyed reading both the paper back and the kindle version of this book quite a lot. R. Strassman's writing style brings some humorous elements to the banal theater of medical experimentation. Medicine, Religion, and Psychedelics make for some odd bedfellows at the close of the 20th century.
Dr. Strassman had me laughing with (or maybe "at") him during much of the book as you can feel first his surprise and then his exhaustion at the turn of events during his case studies. One can envision him reaching for a bottle of liquor as he has to listen to another "being encounter" and then talk to his subjects as if they were real.
The case studies are [of course] awe inspiring and makes one ponder "what really is happening"? Why has DMT been placed on this planet in so many plants and species? What purpose does DMT serve if it does naturally occur in our brain/bodies (as well as countless plants)?
The author's attempts to connect parallel universe, interplanetary travel, and dark matter to DMT at first seem so far fetched (and perhaps dated now), it almost made me stop reading; however, after absorbing it a while, and knowing humans have used these drugs to channel the "spirit plane" for thousands of years, perhaps it's not so far fetched after all.
The biggest upset was Dr. Strassman "giving up" on his psychedelic research after being delivered some blows he may have predicted after seeing the early psychedelic "pioneers" suffer similar fates in their respective communities.

Very nice book on the DMT experience

Very nice book on the DMT experience. It's definitely written from the perspective of a doctor, though. You have to read quite a ways to get to "the good stuff," i.e. the descriptions of the actual experiences of people on DMT. The first half or so of the book details (sometimes painstakingly) the medical and biological aspects of Dr. Strassman's experiments. I understand this is very important and it wasn't difficult to read or anything. I appreciated the lessons on the anatomy of the inner brain and the info on exactly where the chemical reactions take place. The second half of the book, however, was much more entertaining. I found it fascinating that some of the individuals who took the DMT "fought" the experience so hard and/or were unable to verbally express much detail about their "trips." Overall, this book is an important contribution to the study of hallucinogenic plants and a good resource for anyone wanting to study others' experiences of hallucinogens.

Excellent Book!!!

I have been carrying handguns concealed for over 10 yeras and this book is probably one of the top 5 books I've read on the subject. It's not about tactics but more on what handguns and accessories work and tips on cleaning and what to buy to clean your gun. They get into specifics with revolvers and autos. I actually went through the book after reading it once and highlighted parts to use as reference. Whether you're new to shooting or looking to carry concealed, I highly recommend this book.

I highly reccomend this book. I knew very little about handguns, when I bought this book. This book takes you through everything you need to know when you don't know anything about guns. From selecting a self defense handgun to handling, ammunition, shooting, holsters, Psychological factors, and more.

I believe this is the best book out there for someone just starting out.

A good general purpose book on owning a handgun

Like most books on the firearms, this one spends a lot of time on self-defense issues. I wasn't particularly interested in that topic but the book does offer a lot on safety, how to clean and maintain your firearms, and many of the issues relating to owning a firearm. The book touches on legal issues, scenerios to be aware of, and of course self-defense and practical concerns. A good basic book for beginner to intermediate skill levels, experts should probably look elsewhere.

Deborah Stone holds appointments as Research Professor of Government at Dartmouth College and Honorary Professor of Political Science at Aarhus University in Denmark. A must read for any serious policy analyst

I noticed that Dr. Stone's latest work was what can be called a "best seller" in the Policy arena on Amazon, since its debut December 2011 (roughly number 1 for nearly a month, then at least the top 20 thereafter). I was surprised that as of July 3, 2012 not even one person reviewed the book. Perhaps everyone is speechless. But, it really is a good book. Simply put, this third edition of Policy Paradox is an excellent work for anyone seriously wanting to change the world for the better by understanding the political arguments that undergird social policies, which often, and erroneously appear rationally constructed. By understanding how policy can be a struggle for ideas and the control of ambiguity in communities, which she refers to as the "polis," the policy analyst/advocate will be better prepared to jump into the debates by posing alternative viewpoints that ought to more closely adhere to fundamental humanistic principles of social justice and human rights. Having used the previous editions of her book for roughly fifteen years in my policy classes, I must say, that this book with its updated examples and now a new addition of "welfare" ( in addition to liberty, security, equity, and efficiency) as worthwhile goals for policy, which she says unite us as they divide us, is a must read for those from a variety of disciplines, who wish to engage in policy analysis and implementation. It is also extremely well written as the previous editions, with boxes that adequately summarize major points. Interspersed also with amusing anecdotes and even cartoons, I am sure that the reader will not be disappointed with her lively, yet serious style, for as she reminds us, when it comes to policy, the stakes are high.

This book is a classic for good reason. It lays out concepts clearly

This book is a classic for good reason. It lays out concepts clearly, intelligently, and convincingly, all while sounding conversational and not overly technical, as is a pitfall of many academic publications. Stone's frameworks are just that--frameworks--and are useful for structuring one's analysis of policy, while also recognizing that no real world situation fits the frameworks perfectly.

My one large critique of Stone is her extremely apparent liberal bias. While the ideas she presents are not inherently liberal or conservative (though one could certainly make the argument that the 'market model' she argues against is a conservative one and the 'polis model' she champions is a liberal one), the examples she draws to illustrate them are biased towards a liberal perspective. Whenever she presents something 'bad' done in a policy situation, it is almost always a Republican or conservative doing it, while liberal ideas and actions are almost always presented as the 'right thing' to do or a compassionate application of policy. Even as a liberal myself, it got a bit grating towards the end of the book. At times in certain chapters it seemed like Stone was soapboxing about an issue, even if that issue was only tangentially relevant to the topic at hand.

If you can get past the bias, and perhaps only skim the examples she uses, there is still a lot to get out of this book.

Economics and rationality against the community and politics

This is a fascinating and thought provoking book on political decision making. I have used it as a text in my doctoral course on policy analysis for nearly two decades.

She juxtaposes two models in this book. (1) The rationality project. This is where we use rational approaches to policy making, including economic analysis. The idea is to use neutral and objective data to make the best policy decision possible.The model for society and its functioning is the market, with its emphasis on self-interest and rational calculation. (2) On the other hand, she points out that this does not describe the political world. Here (see the chart on page 35), we see that community is important (not just self-interest), altruism has a role to play, cooperation and competition coexist, and so on. Politics is an arena where there is contestation over facts, values, even numbers. There is no objective, neutral evaluation of facts. The very nature of the economic, rational approach is contested.

The volume explores the debates between the political and rational models in such arenas as the goals for society, the nature of deciding on which problems should be addressed, and how solutions are addressed.

This is a thought-provoking work that will leave readers thinking about the nature of policy making and what is at stake.
