About the Author
Beatrice Chestnut is a practicing psychotherapist, coach, and business consultant based in San Francisco. She holds graduate degrees in communication studies and psychology and has been working with the Enneagam for over twenty-three years. An experienced teacher and group facilitator, she has taught at Northwestern University and trained students in interpersonal learning groups at Stanford University and the University of San Francisco’s Law School. Great for more advanced Enneagram enthusiasts!

This is the third book I've purchased on the Enneagram, and I've definitely enjoyed it the most - however, I wouldn't recommend this book to beginners. If you're new to the Enneagram, I would start with Discovering Your Personality Type by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson, which includes the Riso-Hudson Type Indicator - a pretty intensive test to determine your type - and a brief overview of the 9 personality archetypes. The Wisdom of the Enneagram is an excellent book for a more in-depth understanding of the personality types.

I ordered this book when I found that Riso and Hudson's books weren't giving me the depth of understanding that I wanted. Beatrice Chestnut's book builds off what Riso and Hudson do in the Wisdom of the Enneagram, but goes much more in-depth. If I didn't already have a lot of background knowledge, I might not have enjoyed this book as much as I did. I especially appreciated her examination of the subtypes, which she explains in great detail, and her explanation of the counter-types. Overall, an excellent read and purchase!

She explains the Enneagram's history and esoteric context well and is well placed herself in its modern lineage to offer personal insights as a long-time student, teacher, and practicing therapist. Chestnut's personable writing style is a good match for the task as she combines extensive (and annotated) research, first-person self descriptions, psychological theory and examples from great literature. (The stops on Homer's Odyssey track the obstacles each personality type confronts in becoming more self-aware, and vivid analogies from Dante's Inferno help underscore the Shadow side of each type.) The subtype sections show how basic human instinct (self-preservation/broad social/personal one-to-one) refines the passion in each Enneagram type into three different expressions - or 27 personalities. This book is not lightweight, and experienced Enneagram students might indulge the urge to skim some of the background theory. I say, So be it. The Complete Enneagram goes the extra mile to add both depth and breadth to a harmonic system for distinguishing personality from reality. And perhaps most importantly, Chestnut explains what we can choose to know about ourselves and others when we do so.

A great honoring and celebrating of the subtleties of the work of Claudio Naranjo

I so appreciate Bea's thorough and insightful approach to teaching the Enneagram through this book. I've studied the Enneagram for almost a decade, having worked with several different teachers. My personal perspective is that Claudio Naranjo's understanding of the 27 subtypes, which Bea aims to elucidate in this book, is a critical aspect to the model that many other Enneagram teachers have thrown aside for more simplified approaches to the 27 variations.

As a devoted student of Claudio Naranjo, I see Bea's book as a great honoring and celebration of the work of this primary innovator of the Enneagram, and as an executive coach, it has become one of the only Enneagram books I invite my clients to read.

The�Star-Eater�world....In ancient days before humans spread their populace to the stars, a company that got too big for its britches would find the Government gently reining it in or roughly shackling it down. And when a company got too big for Government oversight, usually its own weight would cause an implosion; the force of natural expansion and demise.�When a company gets bigger than its Government, then you have a problem on your hands. The MacCollie Company got bigger than that: they ruled travel to the stars. The development of the L-Space drive--the first practical FTL drive--created a monopoly that allowed access to the stars only to those the MacCollie company felt they could trust.At first, they trusted only the Government--the Fellowship of Humanity. Slowly, carefully, cautiously, they expanded access to a few independent businesses, and the race to colonize other worlds took shape.That put Earth's problems in a new light. When you're orbiting Aldebaran three checking for possibilities of Terra-forming, a flood in Bangladesh seems a long, long way away.Of course, even with the L-Space drive, interstellar space travel was in its infancy. It took twelve years to reach Earth's nearest neighbor, Alpha Centauri. With the advances in drive technology, it took only took four years to reach Lushman 16. It took a mere six months to orbit the planets of Epsilon Eridani.�Yeah, we humans are good that way; give us a problem, and we'll work it out.�But let's get distances into perspective... Our galaxy is 200,000 light years in diameter. Flying at Light Speed (LS), to get to the nearest edge would still take us 87,000 years.�Then Hector Faber (a MacCollie scientist, of course) discovered and developed the H-20 Drive; capable of faster than light speed by quite a bit. As usual, Earth politicians took two years to decide what to call it; the 'H-2O Drive', the Faber Drive, but the pilots were way ahead of them. The invention was Faber's, the process was simply called FTL-VII (Faster Than Light, Version II). Yeah, it didn't make a dent in those Galactic-Edge distances, but it sure sped up travel in the Fellowship Worlds. Thanks to MacCollie, planets were colonized tout suite!�When MacCollie Scout Benjamin Steele discovered "jump holes", it was the time to head into the unknown en mass. Basically rips in time and space which, like a star, seemed to exhibit long stable periods, they transported FTL material across huge distances in an instant.�MacCollie jumped at the opportunity like only they could. In a year they manufactured 1000 Survey-Scouts, recruited 1000 pilots, and fired them to every corner of the Milky Way.�Enter our hero... Seth Gingko.

This series is imaginative and exciting. Mix a bit of Andromeda Ascendant with a lot more snark, a Malcolm Reynolds- type captain, aliens, hardcore sci-fi, and bad luck and you have an idea about the series.

Race Horse Owners' Alert

Your trainer will injure every horse in the shedrow, most within 90 days, guaranteed. According to Tom Ivers our race horses lack the physical conditioning necessary to perform what they are being asked to perform. And hence, Fit Race Horse I (1983) to Fit Race Horse II, and all the superb tapes, newsletters, books and lectures in between. The best Ivers' book was the original with its witty insight into the sport. The Race Horse Owners' Manual was the most complete. Tom Ivers is a pioneer in bringing science to the racetrack in nutrition, shoeing, veterinary, and exercise physiology. Ivers summarized, compiled, exploded the old wives' tales and generally exposed the questionable world of the professional horse trainer. Ivers valuable contribution to the sport one day will be recognized. Much of Mr. Ivers work is out of print, so Fit II, probably the weakest of his work, is what we have, but it still contains much of the prior work and conclusions. Ivers overlooked that in athletics everybody trains differently and I am unable to endorse the exercise prescriptions, even having followed them religiously with a couple of horses. But despite that one flaw, besides Ross Staadens invaluable "Winning Trainers", Ivers work is easily the best I've read on training race horses.

Finally. Someone in the race horse business who makes sense.

If you're new to the race horse business, read this book and learn it. If you've been in it for a while hold on to your hat, he's going to walk all over your feelings. The content is orderly, clear, and written in a manner that keeps topics such as spiculated red blood cells from putting you to sleep. Which is a good thing because he goes into a lot of detail. The main topic is interval training for all breeds. He asumes that you're already a horseman or have one on your team, so he concentrates on the specifics of this very intense form of training. He makes complete sense and insists that you can make any conventionally trained horse better(lots)with his methods. Outstanding textbook for anyone using the Mulligan technique. The skills are demonstrated beautifully and described in a manner that is simple to understand. Plenty of clear pictures for us visual learners. Instructions for joint strapping are included as well.

Great Guide to an Excellent System.

Should be mandatory for all manual therapist. Clear instructions and illustrations of the Mulligan Concepts techniques and whenever appropriate adjunctive taping and home exercises for all areas of the body. Quick but thorough covetage of CROCKS and PILL acronyms that are used, followed by brief review of reasoning and principles for using MWM in Intro chapter. This is not a scientific overview and never claims to be. For that read Mobilization with Movement which proves an excellect theoretical and research based coverage of this area.

Unbelievable Source of Strength for Career Growth!!

This book is simply incredible! I have read many self-help books over the years, and having been in the business world for all of those years, I have never seen both areas (self-help and career) integrated so well in one place. In "The Authentic Career" I was able to unlock how my career goals and personal needs could be aligned and fulfilled with the appropriate insights into my life. This book can really help individuals create the space to achieve this. Ms. Craddock's own experiences and using real examples of workplace issues were extremely helpful and enlightening. I could approach my job and career in a completely different light after reading and utilizing this book. About the Author
Kathy Barker received her B.A. in Biology and English, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Microbiology, from various branches of the University of Massachusetts. She did her postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Viral Oncology at Rockefeller University and was an Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Cell Physiology and Immunology at Rockefeller University. She is now based in Seattle, where she writes and gives workshops on various aspects of running a lab.

Some useful, some self contradictory

There is a lot of information in here for someone who doesn't know anything about labs. It's mostly superficial information, and little useful advice. I was disappointed that the author clings to old notions that good scientists want to do nothing but science all the time. The quotes from other investigators are a good idea, and she clearly is trying to present a broad range of views since one quote may say the exact opposite of another. Actually I found that disconcerting and confusing. But some of these viewpoints are offensive and by including them she tacitly endorses them. Throughout most of the book she seems to subscribe to the viewpoint that science can only be done with late nights and weekends. Then she completely reverses that in the chapter on preventing burn-out.

This book is ok as a supplementary book for a prospective or new faculty member, but a better one in my opinion is "Advice for New Faculty Members" by Robert Boice.

Should come with your contract offer

This is a great "how to" for a new PI. There are so many great recommendations that I would rather know before wasting time and money. The time from hiring until is short- most of us have only 3 years to attain some funding. Kathy is like a mentor that you wished you had. I think the most important advice is for hiring post docs and techs.

As someone transitioning to an independent lab soon, this book has been quite useful in thinking along the lines of managing and preparing for that new position.
