About the Author
Norman Kretzmann, Susan Linn Sage Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Cornell University, New York, completed this book at the beginning of 1998, and died in the summer of that year. He taught philosophy at Cornell for more than thirty years, and also held appointments at Bryn Mawr College, Ohio
State University, and the University of Illinois, and visiting positions at Wayne State University and the Universities of Minnesota, Arizona, and Oxford.


Eleonore Stump is the Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy at St Louis University. She has published extensively on philosophy of religion, contemporary metaphysics and medieval philosophy. Her recent publications include Aquinas (2003), Wandering in Darkness: Narrative and the Problem of Suffering (2010) and The Oxford Handbook of Aquinas (co-edited with Brian Davies, 2012).

A Massive Piece of Work

This book is a massive piece of work edited by Anthony Kenney, Jan Pinborg and the late Norman Kretzmann. Moreover, Eleonore Stump is an associate editor of this text as well. The book itself is over 1000 pages. It is a history of late medieval philosophy from about 1100 to 1600. The book is essentially a series of essays that deal with the various philosophical trends, ideas, issues, etc. that were prevalent within the aforementioned dates. The book deals with Aristotelian logic, logic in the middle ages (semantic theory), logic in the high middle ages, metaphysics and epistemology, natural philosophy, philosophy of mind and action, ethics, politics, and scholasticism. Thus, the reader of this text will gain a greater understanding about Abelard and old logic to free will and free choice to God's knowledge of future contingents, and much more. The Islamic philosophers and their influences and ideas are covered as well as the Jesus society philosophers of the late reformation period (i.e. Molina, Suarez, etc.). The text itself is not for the beginning philosophy student, thus the contributors expect their readers to have some back ground knowledge in the issues at hand. This book is meant for the serious student of this period. Therefore, if you love to study the philosophers of the Medieval period, then you will love the detail that this book provides. I highly recommend it.

While nearly twenty years old, these essays are as enduring as the figures of which they are about. must for any serious student of the scholastic period of medieval philosophy.

About the Author
Thomas S. Hischak is professor of theatre at the State University of New York at Cortland. He is the author of thirteen books, including Through the Screen Door: What Happened to the Broadway Musical When it Went to Hollywood (Scarecrow Press, 2004), Enter the Players: New York Stage Actors in the Twentieth Century (Scarecrow Press, 2003), and Boy Loses Girl: Broadway's Librettists (Scarecrow Press, 2002). Hischak is also coeditor of The Oxford Companion to American Theatre, 3rd Edition and winner of a Choice "Outstanding Academic Book" award.

There are two versions of this book: one for guitar and one for ukulele. This one's for ukulele. If you are just strumming the chords (and you know your chords,) it doesn't really matter which book you get, but if you need reminders about where to put your fingers on the frets while you're playing the chords buy this one. It includes a chord diagram above every chord in every song which makes it much easier to learn the songs.

Several reviews write that this book is too advanced for them, but there is a good variety of levels among the songs:

Beginning
Na Ka Pueo (C, F, & G7), Keyhole Hula (Kauhoa Mai) (G, C, D7), 'Ulili E (C, F, G7 with an extra note on the F that can be left off and a C5 that can be played as a simple C if desired)

Intermediate (Each song has the basic chords with a couple of new chords added in to give it a richer sound. These range from super-easy chords like Gsus or G9, or more advanced chords like Bbmaj7 and Bbm)

Advanced (Each song has a mostly more advanced chords that change quickly)

The bottom line for most people looking at this book is whether they can play Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World and White Sandy Beach: On Over The Rainbow there's a G/B, but a plain old G sounds almost the same, there's a C played as a barre chord on the third fret, but a regular C works, there's an Am7 & an Em7, but in both cases plain Am & Em can be played. If you've been playing for a little while you should be able to play this song in a basic way. If you give yourself a little time to learn the Hawaiian strum that IZ uses on the CD, you can sound great on this song in a relatively short time. White Sandy Beach, on the other hand, has BbMaj7, Bbm & Bbm6 chords that cannot be omitted or substituted with more basic chords. They are barre chords, but they are not super-difficult and can be mastered with a little persistence. If you really want to "up" your game learn the fingerpicking pattern - it may take a few weeks of dedicated practice, but it's SO worth it!

If you are a real beginner you could start with the easier songs and work your way up to the more advanced ones.

All of these songs can be played with just the chords, but this book includes tabbed transcriptions for the exact fingerpicking that is played on the record by IZ. If you are branching out into fingerpicking it's a good way to challenge yourself, and remember that fingerpicking requires muscle memory, so keep at it until your fingers can play it without your brain thinking about it (my Dad used to have me walk around the yard or carry on a conversation with him while practicing my fingerpicking.) If you are an experienced fingerpicker you can see IZ's patterns and quickly incorporate them into your playing for a genuine Hawaiian sound.

I've been playing music my entire life and in my experience it is really rare to find a book that is this accurate to what the artist plays on the recording. Everything is in the right key and the chords are all correct so you can play along with the CD and really get the feel for Hawaiian music as it is played here in the Islands. If you are newer to playing you might want to get a "Slow Downer" music app for your tablet or phone. This lets you play any songs that you have downloaded onto your device at a much slower tempo (but at the right pitch) while you are learning the trickier parts. Very helpful.

One more tip for beginners: don't give up! If the song feels difficult when you try to play it, just keep at it a little everyday. You'll be amazed when one day you realize that you are playing it perfectly. Every time you challenge yourself with a song in this way your skill level increases exponentially. This is one of those rare music books that gives you the chance to really grow.

IZ - The Ukulele Songbook

Excellent book for players who can get around the uke a bit. Has some of the well known hits such as Over The Rainbow, Wonderful World and White Sandy Beach. Notation and (Uke) tablature seem to be accurate. Book is well presented and is using recycled paper giving it a nice quality. As I teach ukulele this book will be invaluable as a resource. Contains 16 transcriptions.

Nice selection of songs, music and lyrics. I agree with another reviewer, it is mostly too advanced for my 'Ukulele skills, I've been playing just over a year. But I like the book, I attempt to play what I can, and look forward to one day being able to play it all. :)

Dan Furst was born in New York. He has worked as an award-winning actor, singer, music and theatre producer, astrologer and ceremonial artist in New York, Japan, Hawaii, India, Egypt and Peru. He travels extensively, and his public speeches and festival performances in the Americas, Europe and the Mideast have made him one of the world’s most respected authorities on the astrology of our awakening into Aquarian spiritual consciousness. Bummed About the Actual Content

This book is very well written, but I was somewhat disappointed. When I read the title, I thought I was getting a book I could read and learn how to DO the astrocartography myself. Instead, after reading this book, I know all about why you'd want to use a map, information about the underlying astrology, and lots of stories about how individual's lives were transformed when they moved to various places correlating with their own personal maps. But, I still have NO clue what my own personal map would look like, and feel like I wasted some of my time.

For anyone going through change in their lives, Finding Your Best Places will give you insights and facts to validate your intuitive feelings. Dan came along in my life when I was contemplating retiring and moving to a new location. The astrocartography reading he provided gave me the impetus to move forward in my life with confident decisions. Having been three plus years in retirement now, the energetic lines influencing my life now feel right for my new lifestyle and the burgeoning multilevel business I have started.

A second astrocartography reading I recently received from Dan addressed where to focus my efforts to best grow my business. This is the kind of information one might pay top dollar to receive and probably not be as helpful as what I received from Dan. Who can argue with Universal Laws governing this science? If I have learned anything in my 72 years of life, besides listening to my wife’s advice, it is to not swim upstream in life; that is, to not work against the universal energies that have been hardwired into my life path this go-around.

This book, as far as I know, is a one-of-a-kind that unveils the mystique surrounding this esoteric science. It adds a dimension to astrology that few have ventured to go. For those who desire to better understand the forces at play in one’s life and to know how to possibly improve your current circumstances, this book is a must read.

About the Author
Scott Ramsey, the foremost researcher into the Aztec incident, has worked on the story since 1987, discovering archives and pursuing interviews throughout the United States. As a specialist in magnetic fields and wire, he has worked for Fortune 500 companies, and currently is vice president of sales and marketing for Express Wire Services in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Suzanne Ramsey's family lived in the Four Corners area, and Suzanne owned a small business there, pursuing media writing and hosting a radio show. She met and married Scott Ramsey after he appeared on her show to discuss his research. Suzanne has traveled extensively, interviewing and pursuing research in university and USAF archives.

Frank Thayer, PhD, is a New Mexico native with extensive journalistic and journalism education experience. Now a professor emeritus at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, he has professional experience as a writer, editor, photographer, and educator.

I figured it would make for a fun read. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that ...

While familiar with the infamous Roswell incident, I hadn’t heard of the Aztec case until recently while planning a trip to New Mexico. This wasn’t surprising considering there really isn’t much available on the topic and, after a like-minded friend of mine bought me the book for Christmas, I was both surprised and elated. Even if it was (as I incorrectly assumed) a rehash of what was already known on the topic, I figured it would make for a fun read. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that not only was it a page-turner, it did offer new insights; mostly debunking the debunkers. If nothing else, the authors did a good job of bringing this event back into the light while exposing what could very well have been one of the most successful cover-ups in American history. Though I was struck by the author’s passion in exposing the “truth” while vindicating individuals whose lives had been adversely affected by its suppression, I think they also did a fairly good job of not allowing it to dictate the prose. I’ve no doubt that future ufologists and enthusiasts will point to this book as the best source on the subject. The book is well written and engaging; and I would recommend it.

Seeking the truth

What a book! If I had screen-writing skills, this would make a great movie script. In 1948 a crippled alien craft lands near Aztec, N.M., diminutive saucer occupants dead, military intimidates witnesses, disc secretly moved away. Silas Newton finds out about it from scientist friends, gives a college lecture on the crash, contacts writer Frank Scully. Scully pens important book documenting the Aztec crash; speculates about radar interference with magnetic propulsion. Then Scully and Newton are defamed by a con man named J. P. Cahn. Cahn wants revenge because he was not sold the rights to the Aztec UFO story by Scully. Cahn and the govt. rig a trial verdict (that had nothing to do with Aztec), against Newton and another one of Scully's sources, in order to cast doubt about Scully's research. William Steinman rediscovers the Aztec incident years after Cahn had publicly branded it a hoax in an article for True Magazine, and finds out that Scully's story checks out. Writes magnificent book but later Steinman gets scared off. Then Scott and Suzanne Ramsey follow up, find additional sources, determine how the saucer could have been moved by military without being detected, confirm existence of radar station. Their first book out of print, worth over $100, this updated edition has been published, with the Ramseys now joined by Frank Thayer. The new book clearly refutes and hopefully puts to rest once for all the notion that the story was a hoax, proving that Scully and Newton were not con men, and that the public was conned by the liar Cahn. The Ramseys' research continues, who knows what will turn up?

It's not what I expected

There are true believers, who see or hear of something they are unable to explain and pronounce "It was aliens". There are debunkers, who in the same situation say "Whatever it was, it wasn't anything to do with aliens". And there are skeptics who don't dismiss or accept everything just as a matter of course. A skeptic would like some credible proof, that's what I would like to see.
Having said that what I'm about to write may seem a bit contradictory. The authors have done a good deal of research that has led to some (in my opinion) credible accounts. At the same time some of the research leads to areas I find hard to swallow.

As I said there are some credible sounding accounts, I'm not going to quote them or name them but I did find them believable. As with many UFO stories though, there are secondhand accounts. These sound great but in the end are not the proof that this book is claiming.

The accounts of the crash recovery and removal just leave me with more questions than answers. Why would you disassemble a virtually intact saucer? How would you accomplish this feat? After all it is alien technology. Who knows what kind of fasteners, fluids, gasses, connections, fittings are involved. I'm not saying it's impossible but I find it hard to swallow. Finding a concrete pad at the crash site is certainly interesting but it is just a concrete pad. Yes, the book does show that a large object, or rather several large objects could have been transported out of the area. But that leads to bringing in more people and moving them a long distance, that just makes the secret that much harder to keep.

But my biggest complaint with the book is that it doesn't seem to be about a UFO crash on a remote mesa near Aztec, New Mexico. What it appears to me to be about is rescuing the reputation of Frank Scully. He was a journalist who wrote "Behind The Flying Saucers" about the incident and was later accused of being a hoaxer. If you're interested in that controversy and ensuing legal battles this is the book for you.

Well folks this book didn't prove to me that a UFO crashed in New Mexico. It did prove to me there's been a lot of controversy about it.

Through an analysis of the politics, society, and economy of Vijayanagara, the author addresses the central question of the extent to which Vijayanagara, as a medieval Hindu kingdom, can be viewed as a prototype of the polities and societies confronted by the British in the late eighteenth century. The book thus presents an understanding and appreciation of one of the great medieval kingdoms of India as well as a more general assessment of the nature of the state, society, and culture on the eve of European colonial rule.
