Great for understanding your test results!

This book has helped me understand why specific blood tests are required and what information they reveal. It gives me more information than a lab test result page the doctor mails out - I never had any idea what all the tests were. It also helps me as a caregiver to my husband - I can look up what test he needs and doesn't need to measure his illness. Great book - tiny print (only con).

A good supplementary nursing school resource

I have added this to my group of useful nursing school supplementary resources. It is very helpful and an older edition does not make a lot of difference. This book has some nice explanations of not just the labs but the reason why the serum components affect.

I am a sophmore in nursing and am just starting out with my paperwork required for clinicals. This book helps to figure out why they would be getting a specific lab test done, and what the results mean. They provide information about nursing considerations and diseases that may cause that specific response. Overall, the book makes my clinical paperwork much smoother. I would definetly recommend this to a friend.

Excellent for the do-it-yourself tinkerer

This book explains making ceramic crucibles in your home shop. Crucibles are not always easy to find and they are very expensive. For a small scale foundry they are easily the biggest expense you have. The crucibles you can make using this book are not commercial quality, but they are your own product and very cheap to produce. I think they work about as well as commercial crucibles. They just don't last as long. The instructions are concise and well explained. As with all of his books, Vincent Gingery delivers the why as well as the how. I couldn't find the recommended materials but was able to substitute others because I understood why. A very empowering book.

I had built a small, charcoal fired furnace and was anxious to try it out. After making a steel pipe crucible I realized that it took too long to heat the crucible and it was overall too large for the furnace with little room for fuel. Commercial crucibles seemed too expensive for such a low budget undertaking so I looked for and found this book.

My daughter is a ceramics teacher and with her help we followed one of the recipes in the book for making a clay mixture that would hold up to the stresses of melting metal in the furnace in a clay crucible. The recipe showed us what ingredients we needed along with the proportions for the mix.

After firing in a kiln I was pleased with how the "just right" sized crucible fit in the home built furnace and how quickly it heated up. It has been used a number of times and has not shown any signs of cracking or deteriorating.

Philip Durkin is Deputy Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, and has led the dictionary's team of specialists in Etymology for the past fifteen years. He is the author of The Oxford Guide to Etymology (2009; paperback 2011), which has quickly become the standard work in the field, and of Borrowed Words: A History of Loanwords in English (OUP 2014; paperback 2015).
