A Bloodguard Vignette

This book is really nothing more than a vignette, a deleted scene from The Illearth War. According to Donaldson's foreward this was part of an initial separate section to the novel. However, he realized (after being told by his publishers to cut the manuscript down) that the story (told from the perspective of Korik the Bloodguard) didn't have a narrational connection to Covenant's world, thereby weakening the perception of the Land's unreality so key to Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. Therefore along with Tull's story this episode would have comprised the fourth section of the novel.

However, all of that said I would definately recomend this to anyone who loved the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. You learn more about the Bloodguard in these few pages than in almost the three novels of the first Chronicles--furthermore it is simply insightful and interesting to see things from the perspective of a Bloodguard.

Don't bother with this if you've not read The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. Simliarly you don't need this if you already have Donaldson's collection of short stories Daughter of Regals.

However, if neither of the above apply then you should hunt down this book, especially since this volume will fit better with hard back volumes and includes several illustrations not found in the collection (though the one of Revelstone clearly does not mesh with the book description and the one found in the Atlas of the Land).

Focus is the Bloodguard not Covenant.

A series of chapters, removed from the Illearth War book (it was already too large a volume and required editing) These chapters remove Covenant as the narrator, and focus on the Bloodguard, including rituals, origin and why THEY chose to protect the Lords. Their history and involvement is clarified with this text. I agree it has no place within the chronicles as the viewpoint is that of a third party, however, as a separate book it makes interesting reading when positioned as originally written in the middle of the Illearth War, although the tome was released as an afterthought following the end of the second chronicles. Is this an attempt by Donaldson to sell more books? Or is he genuinely concerned that the reader understands more about the Bloodguard? Read it and make your own decision.

Gilden Fire is is the result of one of the earlier modern fantasy writers inability to write anything short. Obviously a disease that has proved seriously catching.

Because the Illearth War was too long originally and threatened to turn into a black hole, this is a part chopped out of there and deals with Korik the Bloodguard's quest to Seareach, so is not a Thomas Conveant story as far as that goes, directly.

Audio stories are fun to hear

Audio stories are fun to hear, especially from Doctor Who. The idea that Susan is reunited with the Doctor is a sweet one! I only wish that this story is in "cannon" with the rest of the t.v. series and allows a revisit for the two in the future. Carol Ann Ford's Susan deserves a regeneration scene in the t.v. series! Maybe a Great grandson as a companion?!

Strong Emotional Core Holds Overly Complex Story Together

The emotional core of this story is superb. It's the Doctor and Susan, his granddaughter and original companion reunited and how they relate to one another. The scenes with Carole Ann Ford and Paul McGann together are superb. They've got great chemistry and these scenes are beautiful to listen to.

Of course, this is Doctor Who, so we can't just have a family reunion. We have to have a plot, and ultimately that's the story's weak point. It's not that Marc Platt doesn't have any good ideas. It's that the script is so dense with plot, that it buries the emotional lead.

Keeping in mind, this is a one part one hour audio drama, we have college protests over high tuition and fear of aliens and a rising national movement against it, we have Susan deciding to call for help from aliens from space and the aliens arrive with less than honorable intentions, in addition they're programmed to ask you questions like a website's terms of conditions and also replicants and mind control. At the same time, you have Alex, the Doctor's great grandson who is drifting through life. Oh, and there are people stranded on the moon.

This is a whole lot of plot and plot elements, and most of it is either not resolved or resolved in a rushed way. It took more than half the story for the Doctor and Susan to meet and most of the intervening material was not anything we'd care about. PLatt should have created a far simpler story that would have better played on the characters. There's something wrong with the key plot point of the story is Susan neaarly getting the Earth conquered. Jake McGann also turns in a pretty lifeless performance as Alex.

The story seems to also have a bit of a message about the dangers of prejudice and paranoia (in this case about aliens) as represented in the Watch Meetings. However, that message is totally blunted when the first aliens to come in response to Susan's call for help are planning take over the planet.

Overall, the story rates as high as it does because of the elder McGann (who brings life to every scene he's in and manages to push through the denseness of the story) and the emotional core of the story. It would have been a better listen with a less convoluted and busy story.

An Incomprehensible Child

This was originally a freebie given away to BF subscribers which, though not part of the season proper, is intended to go in the gap between 'Death in Blackpool' and 'Situation Vacant'. It's also a sequel to 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth' so there should be a lot to interest any old school fan.

Sadly, it is let down by one piece of casting that just doesn't work. Half of what McGann junior (as Alex Campbell, great grandchild of the Doctor) utters is barely intelligible and the other half exists in an unconvincing nether world of awkwardness and odd inflection. Sorry, Paul: it pains me to say it but the son you love so dearly can't act. It doesn't help that I've never enjoyed listening to Carole Ann Ford much either, who's style of acting seems to come from a time long before even 1963 (though her meeting with "Grandfather" is rather touching). To be fair, the supporting cast aren't up to much either but as the script is by Marc Platt, it is all well stuck together and fits in nicely with the classic series as a whole, (in spite of a lot of the dialogue being a bit clunky. "Freedom for students!")

There are some nice moments and it sounds pretty good but, let's face it: freebies are rarely as good as things that can actually be sold.

Hate-Kill-Repeat...Jason's Back!

Jason Arnopp gets big snaps for doing his homework, as hate kill repeat is a nice piece of the puzzle as far as the movies are concerned. This book picks up right after the events in Friday the 13th Part VII: the New Blood where Tina shepard summons her long dead father from the lake to throw chairs around Jason a pull him down into its murky depths. Excellent! And thats where they find him, buried up to his neck at the bottom of Crystal lake. I also liked that Arnopp mentions some of the Events in Friday the 13th VI: Jason Lives, in that Sheriff Garris got folded in half, and that the good folks of Crystal Lake changed the name to Forest Green.

So a couple of Moral crusaders go on a killing spree headed for crystal lake to try to join up with Jason, yeah o.k., you read how that comes out. I'll give you ten guesses but you're only going to need one. Beside the thin plot, and some stereo type characters the action in this book are fast, and at times very graphic. Watch out folks the body count is off the charts! The trade off between characters and situations are very smooth, Arnopp keeps the action going. This book did surprise me with a little bit of a twist near the end. The other thing I liked about this book was that not only did it pick up where movie #7 left of, it also eludes to what happens in the beginning of Jason goes to Hell. I would have given this book one more star for a perfect score, but some of the characters I thought were just a little to cheesy. Bottom Line....Highly entertaining!

FRIDAY THE 13th 3: Hate - Kill - Repeat by Jason Arnopp is the story of a sophisticated couple, the Thawns, who are members of a cult called the Redeemers whose mission is to rid the world of sinners. They are on their way to Crystal Lake to connect with Jason Voorhees. They feel that Jason has a lot in common with them since the teenagers he kills are sinners engaging in promiscuity, drugs and drinking. Along the way, the Thawns commit many murders. Among the people they kill are some drunks having a threesome in a motel room, a slimy executive and the receptionist he was having an affair with and a female gas station attendant who 'came on' to Ms. Thawn. They also attempt to kill a pregnant girl from a trailer park. FBI agents Daimler and van Stadt are hot on their trail. Of course, Jason isn't helping matters any with his bloody killing sprees at the lake.

From the very first page, the book grabbed my attention. It is filled with fascinating characters, tense scenes and earth shaking terror. The plot is so twisted that the ending is a big surprise. Friday the 13th Part 7.25

This book is set to take place after the events of Part 7 involving Tina Shepard. I would place it as taking place after Part 7 but before the book, "F13: Church of the Divine Psychopath". Quick synopsis here: Police divers attempt to recover Jason from the bottom of Crystal Lake at the urgings of Tina Shepard - nice return from the grave set up for Jason. Holier-than-thou spree killers Norwood and Penelope Thawn are killing their way to Crystal Lake to link up with like minded sin avenger Jason - of course this doesn't work out for them. Throw in the female 'hero' of Halo, the savior Tom, a new hotel on Crystal Lake (renamed Clear Waters now), some FBI agents chasing the Thawns, and turn Jason loose for some murder and dismemberment.

Again here's another novel that could be easily turned into a screenplay with small changes. You could do without the whole Thawn storyline but it works well enough. The Redeemer organization they belong to can then lead into the Church of the Righteous Vessel in the 'Psychopath' book. There's some good gorey deaths and Jason stays fairly true to his development through the movies. It's an acceptable book for fans but let's face it, it's not Steinbeck so don't expect deep plots or anything. Good straight forward Friday the 13th stuff here for the fans. If you're not a fan of the franchise, it's best to just skip the books which are written for the fans and not for the masses.

Exploding ignorance

So much of what we know is just wrong. From internet facts to everybody knows that, we make things up and believe them, with nothing backing them but the knowledge that we all agree we knew that. And yet, by shifting slightly, Howard Wainer says we can outsleuth Sherlock Holmes.

Wainer demonstrates it in a remarkable lawsuit where he was called into aid a “professional license” exam taker who was falsely accused of cheating. Wainer showed the evaluation system, which looked terrific at first blush, was actually terribly inaccurate and unjustifiable. Wainer compares it to mammography, a parallel system that shows the same misguidance. In mammography, false positives rule. In breast cancer cases, only five percent of positive mammographies represent actual cancer. He shows this from mammography’s own impressive (at first) numbers. Testing for cheaters – no better. Ruining someone’s career over such lousy methods – unacceptable. Who said statisticians couldn’t be cool?

Wainer shows convincingly that fracking does cause earthquakes, that tenure in education is actually cheaper than hiring annually, that global numbers predict the breaking of sports records, and that the whole field of education is rife with truthiness based on gut feeling (and outright criminally rigging results).

He says there are three reasons why people won’t listen to the facts:
-A lack of understanding of the methods and the power of the Science of Uncertainty
-A conflict between what is true what is wished to be true
-An excessive dimness of mind that prevents connecting the dots of evidence to yield a clear picture of likely outcome.

The purpose – and value - of Truth and Truthiness is in its applicability. Wainer’s approach achieves results without computer power or advanced mathematics. The conclusions are self-evident if we follow the data. Just thinking this way – in the manner of data specialists – means better decisions for all of us. And so he rightly calls the concluding chapter Do Try This At Home.

Just don’t pick an argument with this man.

Statistics made entertaining? Yes, it’s possible. Let’s test it.

I loved this book. It’s not so much about statistics as about testing vs guessing. Author Howard Wainer writes in a conversational manner and with a keen sense of humor. The book was hard to put down. As I was reading the book I noted that a little over two chapters were missing from the advanced reader copy I had received. My first thought was too bad because I loved the book so far. My second thought was that when I write my review can I assume that the missing pages were as good as the pages that were there? I thought this because Wainer goes into a lot of detail about missing data. My third thought was that Wainer had already taught me to think like a data scientist. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is involved in research.
As a postscript, I received the full book from the publisher and as suspected, the missing pages are as good as the rest of the book.

A book by a real statistician for the rest of us

There are plenty of books on statistics for the popular market. Many of them try to make statistics exciting but end up being boring or, worse, full of misinformation. Howard Wainer is in that handful of writers (Daniel Kahneman, Jordan Ellenberg, Andrew Gelman, ...) who know what they are talking about and are able to explain it to the rest of us in ordinary language. This book dares to spend a chapter on Donald Rubin's breakthrough on the intricacies of causal inference, on Hartigan's Inside Out Plots, and on how statisticians deal with missing data. If you want to learn how a statistician thinks (forget formulas), then this is your book.

Questions about the wind have been big this spring in my house, and honestly, I couldn't give my 4 year old an answer. This book supplies the answer. Now I can say, "It's when hot air and cold air change places," and he's happy. Great pictures. Great concepts. Talks about things they can relate to. It holds their attention very well.

About the Author
After experiencing the horror of the September 11 attacks in his high school senior year, Jared Maxwell enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent the next nine years in service to his country.
Between March 2006 and June 2007, Jared fought on the frontlines in a heavily forested, mountainous area of Northeast Afghanistan. Unsung Memoirs of an Infantryman is a first-person account of this time in his life and of the history and stories behind fighting in Afghanistan's deadliest province as a young man. Jared also details his deeply personal account of developing posttraumatic stress syndrome due to three tours in combat.
Although originally from New York, Jared has spent most of his life as a Florida resident. Upon leaving the military in 2011, he began attending college and is currently a college student and aspiring novelist. Unsung is his first novel.

Amazing story!

Very well written, keeps you interested through the whole book. It is sad at times and funny at times but its very informative too. God Bless our troops!

This is a must-read for anyone who calls themself an American. A true story of what our soldiers have gone and are going through for all of us from the perspective of one who was there and really knows. My thanks to you, Jared, and those who served with you. Good Job!

Hard to put down

A hard honest look at what our troops endured in the Kunar Province, told from an infantryman's viewpoint. It should be hard for anyone to pass a soldier and not thank them after reading "Unsung".
