What A Plan!

W. Bruce Cameron is a writer who always satisfies my need to read. His books are well written with a large dose of humor. The main character in The Midnight Plan of the Repo Man is a man who wants to do the right thing. Ruddy McCann was headed for the NFL but wound up in prison instead for vehicular manslaughter. When he gets out of prison, he refuses to pursue that football career in deference to the dead girls parents. He couldn't imagine being seen as a big shot on the field when they will never again see their daughter alive.

I like everything about this book. The cast of characters are unique and fully developed, just odd enough to make them interesting and believable. The complicated plot plays out in such a way that it's not the least bit difficult to understand. Just as an example, we hear another person talking to Ruddy inside his mind and don't know how it got there for quite sometime. Ruddy thinks maybe he's finally gone crazy and the reader is treated to a play by play of their dialogue that is hilarious.

I can recommend this book to anyone who likes to read a good story and has a sense of humor. If you've never read Bruce Cameron's books, do yourself a favor and start with this one. If you like dogs, A Dogs Purpose, A Dogs Journey or his most recent book The Dog Master are all excellent.

Sheer Fun From Beginning to End

Ruddy McCann's life was pretty sucky even before he started hearing a voice in his head. Since that career in the NFL thing didn't pan out, he's been working as a repo man and bouncer in his sister's bar. He didn't think it was possible, but things are going to get a whole lot worse.

The voice - who is it? What does it want?

Turns out, the voice has a name - Alan, and he's not any happier about the situation than Ruddy. As he astutely observes, "I'm a man trapped in a man's body."

This, of course, turns out to be something akin to having Felix Unger and Oscar Madison try to inhabit the same brain, and translates into pages and pages of merriment for the reader.

There are a lot of things going on here. Ruddy's suddenly trying to solve a murder, while figuring out who's sending bad checks to his feeble-minded buddy AND dealing with his sister's new beau's shady credit card scheme. The author manages to keep all plates deftly spinning, so three cheers for that.

My favorite bits were the repos and even more, the attempted repos. As Ruddy puts it, being a repo man requires "nerves of stupidity", and that is well demonstrated here. One repo turns into a repeated gag which had one of THE BEST conclusions EVER. It also provided the BEST LAUGH I've had in ages!

Oh, yeah - there's also a lovable elderly dog (who doesn't die!)

Paws down, this is a winner.

Exciting book-couldn't put it down

From a favorite author, this story captivated me instantly and I had to keep reading until the exciting conclusion. While weaving lots of action in between interesting characters and settings, the story was playing out so strongly in my head that I was actually seeing it as a movie that was rolling. It's got love, dogs, mysteries, heroics, and all in a couple of hours of quality reading enjoyment. W. Bruce Cameron scores another success.

This book presents a survey of Chinese painting from the eighth to the 14th century, a period during which the nature of China's pictorial art changed dramatically. Illustrated by works in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the author begins by describing the advent toward the end of the Bronze Age of figural representation in Chinese art, and next traces the development of Chinese landscape painting from the third to the tenth century. He then moves on to discuss the art of the Sung dynasty, when the imperial government was increasingly absolute and repressive. In this period artists shifted from a realistic rendition of nature to more symbolic representation of single flowers, rocks and trees. By the time of the Yuan dynasty, following the Mongol conquest of 1279, objective representation in art had been replaced by imagery that drew on the artist's inner response to his world. Because it was believed that the meaning of a painted subject, made complex by personal and symbolic associations, could no longer be expressed without language, the painter began to inscribe poems and incorporate calligraphy in his works, the multiple relationships among word, image and calligraphy forming the basis of a new art. At this stage Chinese art entered its richest and most diverse stage f development.

Fong is one of today's most authoritative voices in the study of Chinese painting and calligraphy. Here he uses works from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to illustrate the history of painting and calligraphy during the Five Dynasties, Northern Sung, Southern Sung, and Yuan periods. Comparisons with better-known paintings in other collections are occasionally made, but one of the book's major purposes is to serve as a showcase for the Metropolitan collection, which detracts somewhat from its effectiveness as a history. Still, the reproductions throughout are of good quality, and Fong's prose is accessible to readers without much prior knowledge of the subject. The discussion of calligraphy is particularly clear. Wide Open ~ Fantasy Playland

Cleo Peitsche is fast becoming one of my favorite authors for short hot stories and Open Wide does not disappoint. Georgia wakes up in Billy's bed to start the story, from that point forward these two connect and he makes a plan for a new position for both of them at Fantasy Playland. He plans this position just for Georgia and with only him as her partner... HOT & STEAMY!!! The story is so much fun. The cover is a hot woman with another beautiful turquoise bra this time ~ sexy!

I wish he had produced this gem 50 years ago so I could have used it when I was a trial lawyer. About the Author
Shane Read is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Texas School of Law. He began his legal career in 1989 at Akin Gump in Dallas, Texas, before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C. from 1992-1998. Since 1998, he has worked at the U.S. Attorney s Office in Dallas. He has been lead counsel on countless civil and criminal trials over the past eighteen years. In addition, he has served as lead counsel for numerous oral arguments before appellate courts. He has also held a wide variety of teaching positions during his career. He is currently an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. Here he has taught Trial Advocacy, coached mock trial teams, and currently is teaching a unique seminar on trial strategies. He has also taught both new and experienced lawyers at NITAs seminars on trial skills and at the Department of Justice's National Advocacy Center.

A Well Written, Well Presented Exposition of Trial Advocacy

A journeyman knows the mechanics of his trade where a master craftsman knows not only the mechanics, but the theory behind his trade. It is easy to see that the author of this work is a master craftsman as well as a master teacher.

"Winning at Trial" gives clear, concise guidance on how to navigate the turbulent waters of a trial without running aground. Mr. Read teaches not only the basics, but also the nuances of courtroom performance, and does so with concrete, real-world examples from actual cases. The information is presented within the National Institute for Trial Advocacy's model for trial advocacy, and that model is an excellent one.

I particularly liked Mr. Read's handling of cross examination. His description of the objectives of cross examination was very good, his instruction on how to impeach by prior inconsistent statement was sound, and he gave an excellent analysis of when and how to ask the ultimate question.

Great practice tool

I am a former student from Mr. Read's Trial Techniques Course at SMU, and I can say without hesitation that this book was the most helpful tool I received in law school (aside from, perhaps, the Blue Book). Even after leaving law school, I consulted "Winning at Trial" both in my studies for the practical portion of the Bar, and in actual litigation practice. The recommendations provided by Mr. Read are straightforward and extremely relevant to practicing in court today. The book is easy to read, and well organized, so if you require guidance on a particular aspect of trial, it can be readily found. The examples given are also factually engaging, which makes it an entertaining read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who plans to practice litigation, and to anyone already practicing who is looking to take their litigation practice to the next level.

Finally, A Trial Practice Book For The 21st Century

If Abraham Lincoln observed most trial lawyers of today, he would find little changed from his 19th Century heyday. It is almost as if there is a law forbidding the use of modern communication techniques and technology in the courtroom. The leaden weight of traditional advocacy training often leads to boredom. Part of the root problem is the lack of suitable books to assist law students and practicing lawyers in developing a sophisticated media influenced form of trial advocacy.
Shane Read has changed all of that in this unique, thoughtful, thorough look at the art of the possible. Above all else, a book about the exciting world of trying cases ought to be exciting itself. This one is. The multi-media approach of this book is unique. The author's considerable experience in trying cases comes through as well. I have been teaching trial advocacy for 25 years and highly recommend this book.

What can I say? This is the classic, must-have book for any winemaker. Our copy went missing so we needed to order a replacement. We've read many books over our 40 years of commercial winemaking but this one remains the standard reference. Buy it, use it, make great wine because of the advice you've received from Professor Amerine.
