This was a good read for understanding the history of feminism, how it has been misrepresented, and in educating how we all contribute to a dialogue and a culture that should embrace equality. However, for the new edition, there was no update as to how to discuss feminism and educate in a broader sense according to our culture, social media, millenialism, etc. It felt old, stale and outdated in ways. And for as many times as bell hooks mentioned feminist education needing to be easy to read and understand, I found many paragraphs hard to focus on for all the jargon.

LOVE this book! It's a great introduction to feminism and how sexism affects various aspects of daily life. I recommend and share this book with anyone who asks me about feminism. It's a pretty quick, informative read, without using academic jargon, anyone can relate. Anything by bell hooks is great though.

William Lindesay lived in Xi'an for four years, during which time he visited the mausoleum of Qin Shihuangdi on 15 occasions. His previous books include Alone on the Great Wall, The Terracotta Army of the First Emperor of China, and The Great Wall. He currently lives in Beijing.

Guo Baofu is director of the Preservation and Conservation Department, Museum of Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shihuangdi. Guo studied archaeology at Beijing University.

A tiny part of a larger picture...

The Terracotta Army of the First emperor of China is a tiny book, 32 pages about the army of life-sized warriors, made from pottery. The book is part of the Close Up series, each book meant to give you an introducation about a certain subject. So while the book is not meant to be a detailed study of the army it does give you a lot - photos, a timeline, background of why it was made and how it was found. A nice little book, I got if from National Geographic Museum when they had a display on the soldiers. I will be looking for other titles in the series.

This book is punchy, to the point, at times delightfully personal, and full of page-turning mini-cases from well-known and successful innovators. This book is well worth the inspiration and ideas it imparts. I plan to use it in the innovation and entrepreneurship courses I teach.

WELL DONE! This is what people should be talking about in the startup world.

I loved this book. It got better and better. I was excited to see what insights I could draw next. The stories drew me in and I felt like I was really learning form the experiences of famous founders at companies like GoPro, DropBox, Spanx, Uber, and surprisingly Ford even. I was totally engrossed. It was an experience.

So grateful this book used so many cool examples and didn't just dive into meaningless discussion about stupid meta ideas like Innovation Accounting (I hate The Lean Start Up, such a dumb book).

Founders used to seem like untouchable magical visionaries who saw the future. But it makes more sense that they searched for something they wanted, like a camera to take surfing. Then finally decided to make one for themselves after they couldn't find it anywhere. From the get-go these founders were experts on their products. They knew from personal experience what these products needed to be.

And it is so much simpler. You don't have to go out and interview people to find their "pain points" (barf). Steve Jobs said it himself. People don't know what they want when you ask them.

You make a product you really want because you can't find it anywhere. You make it good because why would you want to use something crappy. And then at the least you made your life better. And chances are so high that other people will see what you made and want it too!

The rock climbing company guy making himself better equipment! Sooooo cool. Steve Wozniak wanting a personal computer his whole life. Ferry Porsche wanting a light weight car that handled well. This book is all I want to talk about!

oh! and P.S. I loved the personal stories. You have some guts meeting dudes in parking lots to make planners and you were so real when describing your struggles as an entrepreneur. You've got moxie. I hope your ideas make it somewhere. We have too many kids coming out of business school starry eyed trying to be the next big thing without any substance.

Maybe they all need to just get jobs until they really find a big idea.

It seems like just about everyone wants to be an entrepreneur, which is wonderful, but most startups fail. Schwarting reveals a startlingly simple idea that explains why most startups fail but some grow like crazy. This simple idea is called the User Method.

Schwarting relates many stories of failed startups and the problem is, basically, always the same: startups fail because they don't offer a (useful) solution to an intense need; not enough people really care about using the startup's product. Excellent story and illustrations, slightly macabre

Dark, moving story. Very typical dark, intricate, illustrations. Incredibly well-done, and perfect for second language learners, and group story telling. My class and myself very much enjoyed both the story and the pictures. Perfect for allowing younger children to point out all the activities in the drawings. An appropriate theme for Christmas/Channukah winter time frame. Don't forget, it is a tad macabre by today's standards.

Slanted history presented

I found the book to be very good. The introduction to each excerpted work was helpful in understanding the goal of the original writer. The only downfall I have is this particular author seems to be a bit of a revisionist. He very specifically leaves out important pieces that I assume he finds objectionable, such as the basis for the caste system.

A really good book

Before reading this book I thought I knew a lot about Indian religions. I always loved to go to temples and to listen to stories about the gods and read the Gita. I knew many of the saints and had even read some of their writings in my mother tongue and in English. But I was surprised how many saints there were in other parts of the country I had never heard about. Or if I knew their names, I didn't know very much about them. Who would have thought that the Sikh gurus could write such beautiful bhakti songs? And the writings of the Sufi saints are so beautiful - like the Hindu mystics in many ways. As for Buddhism and Jainism, I must admit I hardly knew anything and it was very interesting to read their scriptures. I of course knew that Buddha was from India but somehow I never thought of him as an Indian! Like everybody else I had a sort of bad idea about Tantra Yoga and was glad to learn that there is a lot more to it than people think. But my favourite part was reading the modern mystics like Sri Ramakrishna and Sri Aurobindo and also others like Swami Ramdas. I think everyone could learn a lot by reading this book even if they think they already know a lot about Indian religion. And if you don't know anything about it, this is the best introduction I have ever seen.

Prefer Secular Reading

I thought it was just a book on friendship. The first line was "It's fun to be a kid in God's wonderful world ." I didn't think you would have to be of any particular religion to read this book. Other than that, the book seems fine but I probably will be disinclined to read it to my kids. I would have bought a different book if I had known.
