fiendishly clever

This is a fiendish clever mystery, written with wit and venom. How is it that modern writers of so called cozy mysteries emulate the form without always matching the intelligence?

The book begins with a birdseye view of a charming landscape, filled primarily with British aristocrats and the community that revolves around them. At first glance all is peaceful and pretty, but with the death of an elderly Lord damning secrets begin to seep to the surface. When a murder is discovered Chief Inspector Allen is called in. Is the murder a result of of submerged political scandal or a quarrel over local fishing rights? Are there other factors at work? The murdered man is pleasant fellow of stellar character. Who could have ended his life in what turns out to be a particularly awful manner?

As with another recently read Ngiao Marsh mystery written in roughly the same stage of her career, I am struck by the singular mix of charm and intensity that seems to have arisen as Marsh developed as a writer. Her earlier books were always entertaining and well observed but around this juncture of her career she seems to have become ferocious. There are at least two mysteries from around this period that share this quality and this may be one of her best. I hope that the later Marsh books continue to be released in ebook form do that I can enjoy them. This one was a bit of a revelation.

Another great one.

As usual, I enjoyed this Marsh novel. It has all of what I love: the Brits in the 1930's-40's era, their way of life, and, of course, a murder being solved.
This is beside the point, but I had a chance to visit Ms March's home which is now a museum dedicated to her. It was thrilling!

I first read this book about two decades ago, and have never, ever forgotten the grisly method of murder used in it. It's not presented horrifically, so there's no real need to worry about nightmares, but it is absolutely unique among mysteries.

Very Handy Info Cards, Well Done!!

I am a certified animal massage therapist and I think these cards are great. They are concise and accurate and the diagrams on each card are beautiful. I would highly recommend them for anyone that wants to know more about the anatomy of a dog. They're great!!

Great Study Tool!

I was fascinated by this product the first time I saw the actual cards used by a classmate! I love the detailed, black & white drawings, & the order of the cards is helpful for locating specific anatomical structures. I found that filling in the blanks on the back side of the cards has also been helpful in memorization of the anatomical terms, as well as remembering their location more precisely. Excellent resource for canine anatomy test preparation!

Excellent coverage of Quranic Duas

I think the book does a great job of picking out the Du'as from Quran and highlighting their complete context and thus we get more appreciation of these du'as. I also enjoyed the short version of the reasons for revelation for some of the Surahs that were provided. I also learned a good deal of the ahadith of the blessings of certain surahs of the Quran as reported by Prophet Muhammad (S). I plan to use this book to read and memorize the Du'as and to keep the context in which they appear in the Quran in mind. Good work!

Katya Kolmakov was born and raised in the turbulent post-Soviet Saint Petersburg, Russia, in a posh but whimsical family of a professor of the Russian language and one of the first bankers in the former USSR. Two Master's degrees, sixteen years of teaching languages, literature and translation, and two tattoos later Katya lives in an odd rented house in Winnipeg, Canada, with her husband, her five-year old, and a mad assortment of house plants. A baker in a local organic bakery and an aspiring arborist, Katya grows vegetables and herbs in her garden, takes her kid to the zoo, and writes every evening.

I'm convinced.

This is a wonderful story. The courage of the main character as she faces and learns to live with her demons is inspirational. But at it's heart this is a love story, about two real (somewhat flawed) people, who find each other. The romance is heartbreakingly lovely; full of tenderness, laughter, anxiety, soul searching, hot lovemaking, and ultimately hope. I loved it.

A character driven narrative that does not disappoint

Convince Me the Winter Is Over is a book that is difficult to categorize, but easy to enjoy. The characters are well developed, believable, engaging, and ultimately what drives the story.

I don't often read books that can be labeled "romance" and while Convince Me the Winter Is Over can certainly be labeled such, it doesn't fit neatly into that box. It's an in-depth look at a very personal story of growth and empowerment and is engaging enough to keep the reader turning pages and yet it is by no means plot driven.

Kolmakov manages to capture the voice and inner workings of a very intriguing mind (Renee's), at a time when that mind is confronted with the choice of continuing her pragmatic, merely-functional existence--constantly tempered by her PTSD--or accepting the risks of embracing a life full of... more.

The only downside I encountered was the occasional repetition of words that was mildly distracting and is unlikely to bother most other readers (I'm overly picky about that kind of thing).

I was well rewarded for stepping outside of my standard genres, and I recommend this book unreservedly to anyone who enjoys well written, character driven fiction.
